Ian Hutchinson, the man with the long throw who famously set up David Webb’s winning goal in the 1970 FA Cup final replay, has died aged 54 after a long illness. He was a Chelsea player for eight seasons, from 1968 to 1976. After his playing career had finished, he was once infamously thrown out of Stamford Bridge by Ken Bates when paying a visit to his old stamping ground. Bates did not recognise him and had security staff escort him from the premises.
A former team-mate of Hutchinson, Ron Harris, said: “I knew he had been ill for quite some time and just recently he had got steadily worse. Ian was very much part of the side. He was a big, brave lad who was fantastic from a defender’s point of view because if you got a ball down the line he was that brave he used to go where other people feared to go.”
“He was a 110 per cent player and I think that was why he went down ever so well with Chelsea,” added Harris. “He also scored the equalising goal for us at Wembley in 1970 that took the game into a replay and he was responsible for the wining goal in the replay with a long throw. At the moment I’m playing a golf tournament with a lot of the old Chelsea players and most of them are devastated.”
