After what seems to have been a summer of miserable weather in the UK, our attentions now turn to something that will brighten us all up; yes the weekend brings the start of the new 2007/08 Premiership season and on Sunday Chelsea take to the pitch to battle it out with newcomers Birmingham City. For fans of all ages, the start of a new season heralds optimism and enormous fervor. Here at CFCnet we have been planning the start of the new season since the whistle blew against Everton on the last day of last season because we’re on blue alert, all year.
This pre-season a committee was set up to meet with Chelsea Football Club and from those meetings a “Big Bang” theory was put in place for the first day of the season, the Big Bang does exactly what it says on the tin, fans coming to Stamford Bridge on Sunday should bring streamers, balloons (of the appropriate colour), blue and white scarves, flags and banners to contribute to sending the team into orbit, thus starting the season with as much noise and colour inside the ground as possible. So if you are a new season ticket holder, a member or a new supporter, we urge you to firstly get behind the team by using those much rested summer vocal chords and secondly to bring as much colour to the inside of the ground as humanly possible.
So, to the game, how good is Sunday going to be? Well, in my own terms, it’s going to be epic. I hope my seat has been polished and is ready for my posterior as I now have a season ticket. When I plonk my backside down and take that first breath of Stamford Bridge air is when I’ll get pumped up and ready to shout my lungs to despair. Although we again have injury fears ahead of new season, this is one we need to win to get off to the perfect start. If we either win or draw this game we will go down in history as being the team to be Liverpool’s home league record of 63 unbeaten. Our current injury list contains our captain, John Terry, plus, Didier Drogba, Claude Makelele, Salomon Kalou, Wayne Bridge and Michael Ballack. However, our squad is big enough and strong enough to turn newcomers Birmingham over.
Birmingham have a bit of dissention in their ranks as manager Steve Bruce has threatened to quit if leading shareholder Carson Yeung interferes with team selection, I doubt if he could do much worse than Bruce himself. Bruce dipped into the transfer market over the summer, bringing in such illustrious names as Olivier Kapo from Juventus for £3m, Stuart Parnaby on a free from Middlesbrough and Franck Queudrue from Fulham for £2.5m.
My Prediction:
Although we have injury doubts and the probability of not having JT to lead us for the opening day, our squad is by far and away better than Steve Bruce’s Birmingham. Could this be the time for Andriy Shevchenko to shine, or for Claudio Pizarro to score on his debut? This will be a win for the proper boys in blue, I’m going to stick my neck out and go for a 4-0 opening day win. Remember let’s make it a big bang start to the new season, if we make noise then let’s hope we hear the ball hitting the Birmingham net.
