The season has started in earnest, so we caught up with Official CFCnet Legend, Kerry Dixon, to get his views on how he thinks it’s gone so far, the new boys and what may be in store for us come May.
Kerry on… The Birmingham Match.
I thought it was a wonderful performance and I thoroughly enjoyed the game. It was almost reminiscent of when Jose first came to the club for me, we were exciting and Jose had said that we were going to play a more exciting type of football. I was so pleased that when we went 3-2 up, we were still attacking and going forwards.
The Matthew Harding stand were chanting at the players to ’shoot, shoot’ and Ashley Cole probably wished he hadn’t as he looked to the heavens, but nevertheless, it was great that the team wanted to keep on attacking. I don’t expect us to be gung-ho and at the end of the day, the three points was the most important thing but I did love the way we played.
I thought Malouda was fantastic and Shaun Wright-Phillips did ever so well too and it was between the pair of them for my man of the match. I also though Salomon Kalou was excellent, Pizarro had a great debut as well, in fact all of the forward players did well, and Essien was also great too.
Kerry on… The New Signings.
Malouda is the one who really stands out, he scored a wonderful goal in the Community Shield and another one against Birmingham. Goals aside though, some of his flicks, touches and passes he made really were very good.
They will all play their part over the coming season, Steve Sidwell has said that he’s not here to be a bit-part player, he wants to have a go, and I thought he was unlucky not to score a goal on his debut with that shot that went inches past the post.
Pizarro got a goal and has goals in him, and I don’t necessarily think he’s going to be a deputy or a foil for Didier Drogba, I expect him to compete for a place in the team and he could even play alongside him if we’re playing the 4-4-2.
I think we’ve bought very very well on the basis of what we’ve seen so far.
Kerry on… The Season Ahead.
It’s a tough call, cup competitions can go any way, there’s the luck of the draw, refereeing decisions and the like. We will compete for every competition we are in but trying to predict what we might win is virtually impossible. It will be either us or Manchester United for the league, and possibly even Liverpool; I think they’ve strengthened enough in certain areas to be competitive this season. I think Tottenham and Arsenal could even be up there competing as well.
Kerry on… The Community Shield.
We did very well in the game and I thought we held our own with a far more depleted side than they had. We were very positive and although it wasn’t a great game, it was more entertaining than the FA Cup final. Chelsea and Manchester United do seem to cancel each other out in a lot of departments but that’s the way it is with the top two teams in the country.
I think we need to practice penalties if I’m to be totally truthful. I was reasonably pleased about what we got out of the game at a neutral ground, but we still can’t take penalties. Let’s hope that we don’t end up missing out on any trophies due to a penalty shoot out, then it’s going to be a tough one for us to take if we keep on missing out because we always lose on penalties.
Kerry on… Top Four & Bottom Three.
Top four pick themselves, although I think Tottenham may gate crash it this season, despite the fact they had a poor result against Sunderland. They’ll be disappointed with that, but it was always going to be a tough fixture.
Bottom three; Wigan, Derby… Sunderland will stay up I feel, as will Birmingham if they play like they played against Chelsea, but I’ll take Boro to go down too.
