First-team opportunities can be scarce for young players in the top-flight. If the team you are trying to break into contains the names Joe Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Florent Malouda, it’s even tougher.
Scott Sinclair is prepared to do whatever it takes to force his way into contention however, so when Queens Park Rangers came calling with a one month loan offer, he jumped at the chance for regular football.
“I’m enjoying it every day”, said the 18-year-old with an air of excitement evident through a mild west-country accent, when asked about his time so far at the Hoops, “Playing in the football league is much better than just playing in the reserves.”
Some players may be reluctant to drop down the league ladder, perhaps prevented by either ego or agent, but speedy winger Sinclair understands the importance of gaining experience as well as valuable match-time.
A similar loan arrangement occurred last season, when Bath-born Sinclair joined Plymouth Argyle in January. He impressed during his time with the Devon outfit, and he’s hoping to make the same kind of impact at QPR.
“I’ve come here to try to improve the squad and try to score more goals,” Sinclair states confidently. “Like at Plymouth I’ll try to get more appearances and play more games. I’ve only got a month here so I’ll go back to Chelsea and I’ll have a look at the situation again in January.”
Chelsea clearly have long-term plans for Sinclair, and a bumper four-year deal is testament to their faith in his undoubted potential. The Blues were willing to let Sinclair go on loan however, and QPR were happy to take him in. With Chelsea team-mates Ben Sahar and Michael Mancienne already at Loftus Road on short-term deals, it didn‘t take long for Sinclair to make a decision.
“Chelsea approached me and said that QPR wanted me on loan, so I consulted with my family and my agent to see what was best for me,” Sinclair said. “Obviously I know Michael and Ben and I spoke to Michael. He told me it’s a good club to be at and to play for so I took his advice.”
Luigi De Canio’s side have seen instant benefits from the Chelsea man’s arrival. A goal in just his second appearance almost handed QPR the win, and only a late Clinton Morrison equaliser ruined what could have been a fairytale start to Sinclair’s stay with the R’s.
So for QPR the campaign to move up the Championship table continues, and with Sinclair’s ambition and drive, there could be joy ahead for both the team and the teen. “I’m having a good season at the moment,” Sinclair explains. “I’ve scored a goal and hopefully I can carry on, keep trying to break in and score goals.”
With Sinclair getting the first-team chances he deserves for QPR, he is more than happy to find himself on the team-sheet at Loftus Road. It may not be long before he’s lining up alongside the likes of Cole, Wright-Phillips or Malouda once he returns to Chelsea, with that all important experience under his belt.
