Chelsea today confirmed on their website that a fee of £15 million has been agreed for the transfer of Nicolas Anelka.

With the loss of Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou to the African Nations, and the lack of form shown by Shevchenko and Pizarro, the signing of a striker proven at the top level was seen as vital by many to sustain the challenge on all four fronts. Anelka is much travelled, but wherever he’s played, he’s scored goals.

Now 28, Anelka’s attitude is a far cry from the behaviour that earned him the nickname “Le Sulk”. He was rarely a problem at Bolton and has handled this move well considering the strops he’s thrown in the past to get his own way. His agent was recently quoted as saying that he ‘deserves this move’ and I also think he does.

This could be the last chance at the top level for Anelka, and I believe he will want to grasp that chance and not throw it away. With the strict regime of Ten Cate in effect at Cobham, Anelka’s other main bug-bear, a sometimes sloppy attitude, should also be kept in check.

If so, then Chelsea’s challenge for the big trophies could well have taken a turn for the better.
