Chelsea Football Club’s commitment to its former players is being recognised tomorrow (Tuesday, March 17) in a specially organised match.
Chelsea FC’s Old Boys team is playing host to the Boston Braves, a team from the United States who travel the world to promote veterans football and friendship through the game.
Before the match at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, kick off 2pm, the club’s Chief Executive Peter Kenyon will sign a declaration with representatives from the Braves to honour football veterans around the globe and pledge support for the setting up of a veterans World Cup.
Kenyon said: “I am delighted we are hosting the Boston Braves. Their commitment to spread friendship through football is to be admired. I think everyone in the game would support their aims and certainly at Chelsea we have pledged to bring all of our old players back into the Chelsea family through a variety of initiatives.”
Last summer the Old Boys team came officially under the club banner after years of it being independently run. This followed the setting up of a Past Players’ Trust to raise money for former players and employees.
Among the players participating tomorrow will be former captain Ray Wilkins, Kerry Dixon and Dave Beasant. The Braves have previously played matches against Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Santos.
