Being there, the two opening goals didn't warm anyone up. It was freezing all night. Strong as the team might've seemed it was weaker than last season when we played both Carvalho and Essien and lost 3-2. Borini took a bit of a knock 1st half and Matic went off limping, so I doubt they wee sub'd to save them for Hull. Matic had a laid back game, but as soon as he went off the young midfield of Clifford and McEachran ahead of Bridcutt were over-run, especially as Mellis, Kakuta and Mitrovic were told to stay forward rather than help out. The 3rd came at the death after Bridcutt was oddly taken off for Philiskirk and it was easy for Villa to get numbers forward in a very composed breakaway.

Delfouneso was well shepherded throughout and eventually sub'd off. Strickland was outpaced by Weimann for the first but did well later in the same match-up. Villa's crossing was testing throughout with Taylor forced to punch away frequently while all our set-pieces barely got the ball off the ground. Villa's back-line was very big and experienced and Borini got no change out of any of them (nor did Mitrovic, though better). Kakuta played a strangely withdrawn position but showed good touches and decent passing. Clifford was a little bit over-awed and nowhere near as good as he is in the youth. The defence was pretty decent - much better than last season. McEachran and Mellis a bit in and out through the game, but some good moves.

What a brilliant article for a game largely seen as unimportant.
Villa fan here and I must say this report was not only informative but unbiased.
Strong enough team out for us though, good luck with the rest of the season, looking good for you it must be said.
