Fernando José Torres Sanz had today signed for Chelsea Football Club on a 5 and a half year deal for a British transfer fee record of £50 Million
Torres arrives from Liverpool FC after becoming the fastest player in their history to score 50 league goals for the Merseysiders. Torres joined the Reds in 2007 from Atletico Madrid where he netted 82 goals in 214 appearances at the Vicente Calderon.
At Liverpool he made an immediate impact, scoring on his Anfield debut in a 1-1 draw against none other than Chelsea FC. He ended his first season in England by scoring 33 goals in 46 games for the reds and reached the semi-final’s of the Champions League, suffering defeat at the hands of Chelsea in a thrilling encounter at Stamford Bridge. Torres was linked with a sensational £50million move to The Blues before the Euro 2008 tournament however Liverpool were adamant not to sell their new star, with the player himself conceding that he had “many years at Liverpool to come.”
The following summer Torres was part of the Spain national team that acheived triumph at Euro 2008, scoring the winning goal in the final against Germany, ending his nations drought of international honours.
That year the striker was included in the FIFpro World XI side and finished 3rd in the FIFA World Player of the Year behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Injury hampered the 2008-09 season for the player, although he still managed 17 goals in 33 appearances for Liverpool, including memorable strikes against Chelsea, Real Madrid and the scoring of his 50th goal for the Red’s against Tottenham on the last day of the season.
22 goals in 32 games followed in the 2009/10 season, notably netting the opener in a 2-0 victory against Manchester United. But with Liverpool ending the season out of the Champions League places and again without a trophy, speculation was growing that a move to Chelsea could be on the cards.
Torres would go on to win the World Cup with Spain in South Africa over the summer despite not finding the net, arriving back in England with a winners medal determined to regain fitness and form ahead of the new season.
Speculation was growing that Torres would be leaving Liverpool for SW6, with world cup winning team mate David Villa claiming that he had his heart set on a move to the Champions, but the reports did not come to fruition and Torres started the 2010/11 season with Liverpool.
The Merseysiders continued to struggle both in the League and in Europe, with uninspiring results and Champions League football again looking increasingly unlikely. However, Torres continued his rich vein of form against the Blues, scoring a brilliant brace against the Double Winners in a 2-0 defeat at Anfield that kick started a resurgence in the players form, netting 9 times in 26 games so far this season.
As the transfer window drew to a close, reports leaked that Chelsea had made a bid for Torres and the Spaniard stunned the footballing world by handing in a transfer request, confirming his desire to join the Champions. After frosty negotiations between the two clubs, Liverpool conceded and Torres arrived at Chelsea in a staggering British transfer record deal to become Chelsea’s new No 9.

please would someone tell me, what does this mean for drogba, he’s been our best player lately, but really… I don’t think these 2 guys are compatible, its great having torres, but drogba has done so much for us
Isn’t it just fabulous that Chelsea can buy Liverpool’s best player, and that they are willing to sell to a rival!
So a word of caution in this mad world, how do we alter our shape for Torres. Is our new first team going to be in a 4 4 2 Cech, Ivo, Luiz, Terry, Cole, Ramires, Essien, Lampard, Flo, Torres and the Drog. I seem to remember Niko having a great few months behind Owen at the pool. Torres, like Owen, likes to play on the shoulder of the last man. If we wanted to be very fluid we could go 5 at the back with Luiz free. It does feel so good though to be plowing £50 mill around and know that whatever shape we have we will have a World class option on the bench
Please sing this song everywhere you go and especially when we play Liverpool next weekend. The song was first heard at Goodison Park vs Everton
He’s now a blue he was a red – Torres! Torres!
He’s left The Kop to join The Shed – Torres! Torres!
He didn’t want to be be a scouse,
He hates it when they rob your house
Fernando Torres – Chelsea’s new number nine!
They thought he’d always be a red – Torres! Torres!
You’ll never walk alone he said – Torres! Torres!
They bought the lad from sunny Spain,
He scored a few then grew a brain
He told the club he wants to leave,
To play with Frank instead of Steve
Fernando Torres – Chelsea’s new number nine!
Your club has no class and no soul. Torres will realise just how crap the Bridge is when compared to Anfield and Liverpool got rid of a player who is injury plagued
Agree, your clubs on the downhill. Too many old players
Oh stop it …. Time for liverpool to face facts …Things arent as they were 30 years ago …No one cares about Anfield any more , the bridge is just fine
Awesome, awesome signings from Chelsea…That should give a kick up everyone’s bottom to start showing some animal instincts on the field. Keeping my fingers crossed to see how the Drogba-Torres partnership will work for the team. To me the signing of Luiz is much more of a relief considering our injury prone back line.
The guy is injury prone £50 mil you got ripped off, how many prem games per season will he play? 1 world class player doesn’t make an aging team better unfortunately :( have him & welcome to him
A legend of player having torres would enable chelsea to get back up their and compete for the premier league and with the attacking option of torres and drogba it would be unbeliveable and would be unstoppable.
The power of drogba would be a others worst nightmare now haivng torres speed and movement would be make the defenders look rubbish !!
Honestly you’re welcome to him. Injury prone and sulky when it dosent go his way. You look at Drogba, who, even when not playing well puts his all into the team effort. not your new number 9. Bitter, yes of course I am, but after some consideration I think Liverpool have the best deal here and Torres wont be right for Chelsea nor Chelsea for him.
We gave Liverpool £50 mill for Torres, a chance to rebuild wisely but what did they do, spent £35 mill of it on a £20mil player… King Kenny?… Kin’ Stupid more like!
Welcome to the club Nando! You’d better build a trophy cabinet in your house.
I am very happy at last we signed a world class player, but how far about Luiz
you are welcome torres.i no have much to say.
Well done Abramovich and CFC! Signing Luiz and Torres is awesome! A final thought: Shay Given for 2nd keeper! He has been left in the lurch today.
Congratulation to Fernando Torres welcome to stamford bridge and get more trophies in first season. Your fortune is to wear the NO .9
