Will this be the season that Chelsea and Roman Abramovich finally achieve what has been lacking in recent seasons, the Champions League trophy? The bookies have made Chelsea 9/1 joint third favourites to win the Champions League this season, is that a good bet or not?
One of the main positives to Chelsea’s chances is their new manager Andre Villas-Boas. He looks like he could be a bit of a European tournament specialist much like Jose Mourinho. Villas-Boas won the Europa League with Porto last season and had his side playing some great football during that tournament, Chelsea fans can certainly expect similar things from the Portuguese manager this season. His young fresh approach may be exactly what Chelsea need having failed to win the trophy under Carlo Ancelotti most recently.
There is also the potential new signings for Chelsea, it seems the transfer of Luka Modric from Tottenham is still likely to go ahead despite Tottenham’s insistence that he is not for sale, he could bring the qualities to Chelsea than Xavi brings to Barcelona and that would certainly help Chelsea break the better teams down. More new signings are expected and there is the added bonus that Fernando Torres should be a better player this season so there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic about Chelsea winning the Champions League and 9/1 could look a big price in May.
There are few other surprises in the Champions League Odds, Barcelona are the hot favourites at 2/1 but no side (not even Barcelona in recent seasons) have retained the trophy so they could be worth taking on. Real Madrid are next best at 5/1 and they owe that price mainly to having Jose Mourinho as manager but he failed to win this tournament with Chelsea and could also fail with Real Madrid whilst Man Utd are currently the same price as Chelsea at 9/1, they have reached the final three times in four years so deserve plenty of respect but they have failed to win two of those finals and may continues to fall slightly too short.
OLBG’s football pages include all the latest Champions League Odds, listing Chelsea at 9/1 to take home the title.
