WILL TORRES OUTSCORE DROGBA THIS SEASON FOR CHELSEA?

It seems that Andre Villas-Boas still hasn’t decided who his best striker is for the season but according to the bookies Fernando Torres is likely to outscore his team mate Didier Drogba as well as Frank Lampard and the new signings at Stamford Bridge this season.

Last season Didier Drogba was the main man for most of the year, he finished the season with 12 goals which was 2 goals more than Fernando Torres scored despite the fact that Torres had already scored 9 goals for Liverpool by the time he made his January move to Chelsea. The fact that Drogba has been a great player for Chelsea, not only in terms of goals scored but also assists, suggests that he would probably be the safest and best choice for Chelsea in attack. Drogba assisted 15 goals last season and in the last five seasons he has had the third most assists in the league so he clearly still has huge worth to the team, 7/2 on Drogba being Chelsea’s top scorer this season isn’t a bad bet.

Torres is the favourite at 7/4 and that price may only appeal as a bet if he is guaranteed to start much more often than Drogba. Torres has certainly looked sharper this season than last but still looks well short of his early Liverpool form and if he continues to fail to supply goals then Drogba could get more and more playing time. The bookies think that Torres will score between 10 and 13 goals this season in the league, that is 15/8 and that might not be enough to be Chelsea’s top scorer, under 10 goals is worryingly low at 2/1 whilst 14-17 is 9/4 and 18 or more is 4/1.

Frank Lampard has always provided plenty of goals for Chelsea, he had his quietest season in a long time last year but he missed a large proportion of the season with injury and still chipped in with 10 Premiership goals which means he was just 3 goals short of being Chelsea’s top scorer. Given a clear run with injuries this season he is likely to play more than Torres or Drogba so could be good value at 5/1. Lampard certainly appeals more than Nicolas Anelka at 7/2 who is likely to find first team opportunities limited this season. Anelka got 6 league goals last year and 11 the season before so he is unlikely to challenge even if he does play a lot.

Of the remainder in the betting it is perhaps surprising to see Romelu Lukaku at just 7/1, he undoubtedly has a lot of talent but he is likely to be behind both Drogba and Torres in the pecking order and at his age would be unlikely to score the required 15-20 goals anyway. Making more appeal is Florent Malouda at 8/1, he was the top scorer for Chelsea in the league last year with 13 goals and is likely to chip in with goals again but the arrival of Juan Mata, who scored on his debut, could see Mata feature more than Malouda, Mata is a 10/1 shot to be Chelsea’s top Premiership scorer this season.

So who should get the nod when they are both fit, Drogba or Torres? Will one of these two be Chelsea’s top scorer or is their value to be had elsewhere in the side with the likes of Lampard and Mata? Should the bookies be offering odds on Daniel Sturridge or does his future now lie elsewhere?
