Chelsea’s players return to club action after the international break and Sunderland are the next opponents. If Chelsea have had a slightly slow start to the season then Sunderland have certainly had a slow start, picking up just two points from their first three games.
It is therefore no surprise to see Chelsea odds on for three points for the trip up to the Stadium of Light but what is quite surprising is how big that odds on price is. At the time of writing, Chelsea are 8/11 to win the match and that seems a pretty generous price considering Sunderland’s team still seems to be gelling after Steve Bruce signed no less than ten players over the summer. Sunderland haven’t won this fixture at home since 2000 although they did beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last season, Sunderland are rated at 9/2 to win their first game of the season whilst the draw is available at 13/5.
What stands out from the previous meetings between these two sides at the Stadium of Light is the amount of goals in each game. Last season’s match was 4-2 in Chelsea’s favour whilst the season before it was 3-2 and the season before that the score was 3-1. This would suggest that over 2.5 goals is a good bet at even money, judging by previous seasons even over 3.5 goals should be a good bet and that can be backed at 11/4 which looks very fair considering Chelsea’s two wins this season have been 2-1 and 3-1.
If the game is going to be high scoring then 2-1 and 3-1 certainly look the most likely outcomes. 2-1 is available at 8/1 currently whilst 3-1 is trading at 14/1 at the moment. Slight preference is for the latter and with plenty of goals forecast for Chelsea the anytime scorer betting makes interesting reading. Fernando Torres just about holds sway over Didier Drogba with the pair 11/8 and 6/4 respectively to score past Sunderland, there could be better value elsewhere though with Juan Mata available at 2/1 after his debut goal, Frank Lampard fair value at 13/5 and Salomon Kalou possibly value at 10/3. One player who doesn’t appeal is Florent Malouda at 11/4 as this is an away game, last season just two of his thirteen league goals came on the road.
