Another easy win at the weekend brought the top four a step closer but there are still some tough games to go and Newcastle certainly won’t be a walkover on Wednesday night. A win in this match could pretty much knock Newcastle out of the race for a top four spot leaving it between Chelsea and Spurs.
The bookies still favour Spurs in the battle for fourth, Spurs are 4/5 whilst Chelsea are slightly bigger at 11/8 but many Chelsea fans are saying they would rather finish fifth, on the proviso that Chelsea win the Champions League and ‘cruelly’ knock Spurs out of the Champions League for next season. That would mean a nervous wait until the Champions League final though and it would be much easier to secure fourth place first and the bookies make Chelsea a 1/2 chance generally to defeat Newcastle. The barcodes can be backed at 6/1 in places to gain a win here and that would see them move 4 points ahead of Chelsea making sixth Chelsea’s most likely finishing position in that scenario. Meanwhile a draw would be a better result for Newcastle and that outcome can be backed at 7/2 with one bookie.
This game was played almost exactly a year ago and that game ended as a 2-2 draw on that occasion, a repeat of that scoreline is a big price at 16/1 and it is worth noting that was the second draw in a row in the league at Stamford Bridge when these sides have met. The previous six games were all won by Chelsea though which suggests that Chelsea are much better value than Newcastle and the last two of those wins came by one goal margins (2-1 and 1-0) and with Newcastle generally in good form recently it could be worth backing Chelsea to win by a one goal margin at 3/1. However Chelsea have rediscovered their scoring touch if last week is anything to go by and Chelsea have won two of the last eight league games at Stamford Bridge against Newcastle by a 3-0 scoreline and that could be worth a punt at 11/1. In those eight fixtures there were also 4-0 and 5-0 wins and those two scorelines can be covered at 22/1 and 50/1 respectively.
Probably the most noteworthy event from last week’s 6-1 win against QPR was the hat trick for Fernando Torres and now is really the time to kick on for the Spaniard, it is just a shame he is hitting form as the season is about to end. Another hat trick for Torres is a big price if you fancy lightning to strike twice, that outcome is 28/1 currently. If you fancy Torres to score first against Newcastle you can get 5/1 and he is 5/4 to score at anytime. Juan Mata always makes some sort of appeal in the goalscorer markets at Stamford Bridge and he is 8/1 to score first and 9/ to score anytime and if you want to cover Newcastle scoring it should pay to back Papiss Cisse, he has scored 11 goals in 11 games since joining Newcastle in January, only ten players have scored more all season and he is 8/1 to score first and 5/2 to score anytime on Wednesday.
