I was wrong about a final fling with Mourinho

Earlier this year I wrote a piece ‘Why one final fling with Mourinho would be no bad thing’ however the way we have finished the season has made me question everything I once thought.

My original beliefs behind bringing back Jose was to lift the club out of the dark and often poisonous atmosphere that had hung over Stamford Bridge.

Rafa Benitez had just made his infamous rant following the 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the FA Cup and the attentions of all Chelsea fans had turned to who was going to be the next manager.

At the time, the club was in a bad way, the supporters wanted Rafa gone, and I questioned why Rafa would wait until the end of the season to leave.

In hindsight, I’m glad he stayed and finished the job, had he gone, that poor feeling would still be there, fans promised to ‘have a party’ when Rafa left Chelsea, when in reality, nobody showed up.

Winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League lifted the atmosphere, and left everyone, especially me, excited for next season.

Having players like Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Oscar, De Bruyne, Lukaku and new signings in the first team really makes you ponder how good we could be.

Mourinho, for me, is the best manager in European football, and I’m not claiming to be unhappy about his eventual appointment, but I believe we could be heading in a better direction.

Three years from now, Chelsea supporters will be asking who can replace Mourinho, because he will be gone again, and like always, the fans will be there with whatever remains are left.

I guess my opinion on how to run a football club will always differ from Roman Abramovich, he lives for today, I plan for tomorrow.

The last 10 years has proved him right, the next 10 could prove him wrong, but nothing is ever a certainty, not in life and certainly not in football.

In the piece I wrote about waiting for Diego Simeone, but since when has Roman ever waited? When he wanted to bring in Mourinho and Andre Villas-Boas he did, and when he wanted to sack Robbie Di Matteo, he did.

Mourinho is ‘The Special One’ but he is not the only one, see RDM and Benitez for evidence, there are other managers out there would could provide us with trophies and drop the sideshow that comes with Jose.

This squad needs a manager with more trust in youth, especially when the likes of John Terry and Frank Lampard end their Chelsea careers next season. Back in March, Mourinho was right, but things have changed.

However, for all the reasons I could possibly think of why Mourinho is wrong, trophies will always make him right, and believe me, I’m the last person that wants to say I told you so, what a hollow victory that would be.

Perhaps I should embrace Roman’s culture, but given our age gap, I hope I’ll be around for many more years than the Russian, and I want Chelsea post-Roman to be just as competitive and successful as it is now.

It’s true life is for living, and Roman wants to see his investment provide results, but for people like him, in positions of power, what people remember of them once they have gone is far more important than what’s thought of them now.

Roman’s lasting legacy will be how Chelsea cope without him, and I believe with the right strategies, the club will be just fine, and he will be remembered in the right way.

The club won’t be just a ‘Billionaires play thing’, it will be a success both on and off the pitch and part of these strategies need to be a long term manager.

Sadly, Jose is the exact opposite of that, and although success will inevitably come, it could come with others, with greater rewards.

I love Jose, ever since he declared himself the Special One and created the best Chelsea team ever seen, but I will always love Chelsea Football Club more, and will put them above him every time.

What’s best for Chelsea is not Jose, and I’m not talking in 2-3 years ‘time, but in 10-15, when the likes of you and me are still here, supporting this football club as we always have.

Don’t we deserve better?
