An anthology based on the Mark’s writings for CFCnet and the legendary cfcuk fanzine, Chelsea Chronicles – volume one – captures in heartfelt, humorous, diary-format prose a period in Blues history when many fans couldn’t quite believe what was going on at Stamford Bridge.

From the glory of the back-to-back title under Mourinho, through the ridiculous reigns of Grant and Scolari, and ending with the FA Cup victory with Hiddink at the helm, Chelsea Chronicles – volume one – provides the reader with an articulate and hugely entertaining insight into True Blue life.

Remember Asier del Horno? How about Maniche?!! There’s a tribute to Super Frank (Sinclair),a homage to Tones Bar and a fiendish assessment of Peter Kenyon’s abilities as a CEO interspersed with European travels to Transylvania, Sofia, Turin, Moscow and plenty more besides which get that ‘Over Land and Sea’ touch and make you feel a part of the constantly unfolding drama.

The surreal meeting with Avram Grant in the “So Bar” a couple of weeks after he had been fired is worth the purchase price alone, as is the genuinely touching tribute to the late, great, King of Stamford Bridge, Peter Osgood which wraps up this excellent first volume of Chelsea Chronicles and makes it a must-read title for Blues fans old and new.

“Now I understand the true meaning of Glorious Unpredictability.” David Cameron

” Gate 17 wearing David Moyes masks in the Imperial after the Cup Final win over Everton – I’m still crying with laughter at the photo – brilliant stuff.” Kerry Dixon

“I’m just glad I’m not in it, God help me if Chelsea Chronicles – volume two – ever gets published.” Ronald Gourlay

Available now for the first time in Kindle format, Chelsea here Chelsea there, the critically acclaimed, best selling Chelsea title from Gate 17 takes you back to a mystical magical world before mobile phones were the tool of choice for arranging “meets” – before the M25 became a match-day carpark – when winning trophies was just the stuff of True Blue dreams (curiously as it has now become for Arsenal supporters) -

Where you one of the 1000′s of Blues fans who crammed into the Highbury library back in August 1984? Here is the story of a phenomenal day out – Chelsea are back, Chelsea are back – hello hello -

Picture the scene, August 25th 1984, Highbury Stadium, London. Thousands upon thousands of expectant Chelsea fans have congregated at the stately home of aristocratic Arsenal to celebrate the return of the Blues to the old First Division. A quarter of a century ago Chelsea were a very different proposition to the club they are today. A luckless Cinderella outfit on the brink of financial extinction, they were represented by an inexpensively assembled team of relatively unknown players.

Despite this, the Blues were able to command a phenomenal away support seldom bettered by the leading clubs of the day and inconceivable in the modern era. Set against a detailed background recalling life in Thatcherite Britain, Chelsea Here Chelsea There is a flawless time capsule for Blues fans seeking a trip down memory lane or those on the lookout for enlightenment in the ways of the old school.

An assemblage of fascinating player interviews, rare and previously unseen photographs and the anecdotal recollections of a broad cross section of Blues fans present on that special day give Chelsea Here Chelsea There an endearingly nostalgic flavour. Dixon, Nevin, Speedie. Johnny Neal s Blue and White army swathed in Le Coq Sportif. Frankie say slogan T-shirts, Hi-NRG music and the lunatic hooligan fringe, Chelsea Here Chelsea There incorporates them all with gusto along with plenty more and provides a welcome shot in the arm for any fan seeking an antidote to today’s sterile football environment.

cfcuk, renowned as the ‘peoples’ publication, has been on the streets since February 1999 when it was originally launched as Matthew Harding’s Blue And White Army. Chelsea Football Fanzine, ‘the best of cfcuk’ Volume One, takes a look back at the first fifty issues showcasing a fascinating selection of articles, interviews and editorial material featured between May 1999 and September 2005.

So this new Chelsea football/punk novel ‘The Wrong Outfit’ turns up on my doorstep and while unwrapping it, I’m hoping this won’t just be another disappointment. I peruse the unusual cover thinking, “This doesn’t look bad, it’s old style punk with a child wearing a Police helmet, with leery punk style letroset writing quite similar to an old Angelic Upstarts picture cover, the innocent kid’s eyes blanked out like some youthful criminal.

Looking at first like a substantial read, it becomes much swifter the more you delve into it: The 70′s home life and Chelsea terrace stories are all bang on, all too real and poignant, those all too frequent crazy “ding-dongs”. I have to say, the terrifying yet hysterical Cold Blow Lane story is without doubt one of the best youthful football tales I’ve ever read.

The punk scenes are woven brilliantly too, even more so as you don’t expect them to perhaps work alongside impassioned football regaling, “Weren’t punks supposed to have absolutely no energy or interest for sport in general?” Well, not here. The Wrong Outfit is a proud and heartfelt tribute to all those football and punk heroes of yesteryear.

There’s also a good few twists and turns of the rollercoaster variety and so many hilarious moments especially, ‘The Hole in the Floor Gang’ and ‘Cider with Rosies’ with its zany, underage, coming of age. Laugh? I nearly wet myself!By the end, there’s a real sense that this loyal Chelsea punk fan, born right by Stamford Bridge, was always destined to put his vivid West London football/punk memories down on paper. And thankfully, not just for himself, but for the benefit of us all.

Verdict? An absolute must read.

You can order the book from AuthorHouse UK

Two goals by Milan Lalkovic and a late winner, courtesy of a penalty, from Adam Phillip, helped our reserves to their first win of the season. With some of our younger players away after the first teams trip in the Champions League to Zilina in Slovakia, it left the cupboard a little bare when it came to our trip to the North-East. Josh McEachran was one such example of a player not on duty.

It was Newcastle who took the lead within the first two minutes of the game when Ryan Donaldson challenged Nathaniel Chalobah, won the ball and sent a shot past Jan Sebek and into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. The Magpies could have furthered their lead a few minutes later when Patrick McLaughlin’s shot was well saved by Sebek.

It wasn’t until around the half hour mark when we had a our first shot on target. However, the free-kick from Jacopo Sala didn’t test the Newcastle ‘keeper enough and he was able to gather with ease. With Newcastle on top and pressurising it was firstly against the run of play when Milan Lalkovic equalised after shooting low past Tim Krul in the Newcastle goal, then secondly, it seemed almost impossible when Lalkovic added a second for himself and a second for Chelsea. A ball from left-back Aziz Deen-Conteh found Lalkovic who again slotted past Krul and it was 1-2.

The home team, shocked by letting in two goals, came back into the game and equalised through Haris Vuckic. However, it was then left to Adam Phillip in the last minute to grab the winner. Phillip was able to get away, he ran into the heart of the Newcastle defence, only for Krul to up end him and concede a penalty. The penalty was left to Phillip, who easily scored past Krul, to make it 2-3.

Teams:

Newcastle: Tim Krul, Conor Newton, Tamas Kadar, Matthew Grieve, Sol Campbell, Patrick McLaughlin (sub Greg McDermott 62), Ryan Donaldson, Haris Vuckic, Shane Ferguson (sub Phil Airey 74), Joan Edmundsson, Nile Ranger.

Chelsea: (4-3-3): Jan Sebek; Billy Clifford, Daniel Pappoe (c) (Aliu ‘Kaby’ Djalo 76), Rohan Ince, Aziz Deen-Conteh; Conor Clifford, Nathaniel Chalobah, Jacob Mellis; Jacopo Sala, Milan Lalkovic (Adam Phillip 81), Gokhan Tore (Michael Woods 84).

After the recent boring international break, the real football returned yesterday. More importantly, Chelsea travelled across London to Upton Park for an East versus West clash. We were looking to continue our 100% record, whilst West Ham, were still pointless – in fact, is there any point to West Ham anyway? The earlier clash between Everton and our main rivals Manchester United had ended 3-3, so any win would have put us four points ahead. For the full official report on the match, click on West Ham United 1-3 Chelsea. Two goals from Michael Essien were sandwiched between a Salomon Kalou goal after another blunder by Robert Green. Former Chelsea old boy, Scott Parker, managed to grab a late consolation goal for the Hammers.

Carlo gave his reaction after our 1-3 victory by praising two-goal hero Michael Essien. Carlo said that Essien is one of the best midfield players in the world and went on to say how happy he is that Essien is back after his injury, which kept him out for a lot of last season. Who can possibly dispute that? For the official post-match reaction, click on Marvellous Michael.

After last years disappointment at losing to Inter Milan in the Champions League, our 2010/11 campaign begins again this Wednesday when we travel to Slovakia for the visit to MŠK Žilina. Carlo, in the build up to the game, has said that the pressure to win the Champions League is no more than winning the Premiership and he likes to put himself under pressure. For a great insight to what Carlo had to say, definitely read the link Ancelotti: No Pressure In Europe.

Our record for August ended with us scoring fourteen goals and conceding zero. If that record continues until the end of the season, I think that we would all be happy. Goals from Florent Malouda, his fourth already this season and a Didier Drogba penalty notched us up another three points against Stoke City, to make it, played three and won three since the start of the season, a little over two weeks ago. There was one change to the side, which defeated Wigan Athletic 0-6 last week, as Paulo Ferreira came in for Branislav Ivanovic at right-back. For the full match report from The Official Chelsea website, click on Match Report: Chelsea 2-0 Stoke City

After the recent 6-0 and 0-6 wins, Carlo Ancelotti warned the fans not to expect high scoring results every week. Carlo Ancelotti explained that we couldn’t play with a high tempo due to the fact that there were a lot of throw-in’s.

Within the last twenty minutes or so, the Champions League draw has taken place in Monaco. With Chelsea being in pot one, we couldn’t have been drawn against any of the other major players, although we could have drawn José Mourinho’s new club, Real Madrid, as they were in pot two. The draw seems as though it has been very kind to us. Chelsea were drawn in Group F by Gary Lineker, we were the last club to come out of pot one. After a laborious and boring draw, which can only be done by UEFA, eventually our group was made up of Marseille, Spartak Moscow and MSK Zilina. Some older Chelsea fans may remember that we played Zilina in 2003 in the qualifying stages of the Champions League. For even older Chelsea fans we played Marseille back in the 1999/2000 season, this time in the Champions League group stages. For full details of the draw and all groups check the link Groups Drawn In Champions League

Our central defender Michael Mancienne has gone back on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers again for the whole season. Last season Mancienne was at the Molineux and made 33 appearances for Mick McCarthy’s team. To read the official line on Mancienne, click Mancienne Back To Wolves

Recently the club announced that our pre-season tour for the 2011/12 season would be in the Far-East. Today more details were announced with Malaysia being added to the itinerary. Earlier in the week Thailand was announced as part of the tour to the Far -East. In Malaysia we will be playing in Kuala Lumpur, the venue where we played in 2003 when the club took part and won the FA Premier League Asia Cup. For details and reaction to the tour, you can click the official link Return To Kuala Lumpur

Ross handed over the editorship baton to Mark Meehan in the mid-nineties. Mark carried on and evolved the fanzine. We were selling 3,000 issues of the Chelsea Independent fanzine on the Fulham Road (outside the Lost Theatre) and it was a joy to contribute during what was a time, for CISA, of unprecedented Chelsea success. To see us lift our first trophy for over 26 years in 1997 was for most Chelsea fans a dream come true – something that could never be taken away from us. There was a writing roster of excellent contributors and things at the Indie looked extremely bright.

Looking back, perhaps the turning point and the start of the Indie’s slow decline was the death of Matthew Harding in late 1996. A real champion of the Independent, Harding was a fan in the real sense of the word and for once there was a glimmer of hope that Chelsea would be owned by a multi-millionaire fan who appreciated and respected all that CISA and the Indie had done. Harding’s death in a helicopter accident returning from an away tie at Bolton was a hammer blow to the Indie. Bates soon resumed his tirade against CISA and all hope of board representation had gone.

By 1998, the writing was on the wall so to speak. Andrew Wrench (who had taken over from Mark Meehan’s editorship) stepped down to be replaced by Mark Wheeler and James Edwards with David Johnstone looking after CISA. Max Dowling and myself wrote the match reports, something we also did for Sport’s First newspaper in the late nineties. It was strange pulling over in a layby at the Stadum of Light and other away venues filing copy to the Press Association. Sport First paid us £30 a report.

Whilst the Indie’s editorial content was stronger than ever there was a convergence of factors that killed off Chelsea’s best-loved fanzine. Perhaps the greatest of these was, perversely, the team’s success. In 1987, there were just over 9,000 fans at the Bridge to watch Chelsea play Oxford on a cold February day. A decade later, Chelsea had four times that amount watching the Blues. Where had they come from? We were a victim of our own success. Due to our location, our high prices, our cosmopolitan image, our team of world stars and the re-emergence of football as a worthy pastime following Euro ’96, the Bridge was flooded with glory hunters and new fans. For these fans, what was there to complain about? Who needed board representation when Zola was scoring the last minute goal in a European Final? Who needed a fanzine mouthpiece?

Football used to be much more than just the game. Like other youth movements (mods, punks etc) it was a way of life. It had its own culture and fashions. This was original lad culture before the pathetic emergence of quasi-cool magazines such as Loaded and FHM. With the gentrification of Chelsea and Stamford Bridge, fanzines lost their appeal. Sales went down. The hammer blow, paradoxically enough, was the Internet and the proliferation of football media. Football was everywhere, on TV, on Satellite, on the magazine newsstands, on the back pages of the Nationals, in books – all competing for readers’ attention. With mobiles and email also producing a cultural shift, the Chelsea Independent went into a quick decline and in 2001 stopped altogether.

Mark Wheeler, had by that time already decided to start a (very) small website dedicated to Chelsea. Mark and I posted our Sport First reports and various match reviews as well as the odd editorial. The url, famously, was http://www.freeyellow.com/members6/cisa.

With the ending of CISA and the ending of the Chelsea Independent, Mark Wheeler, new operative and technical wizard Peter Sampson and myself decided to go it alone reborn and realigned as CFCnet. Within a few months CFCnet hit the national news as being responsible for what was called “Mission Celery” by Reuters.

With only a small initial readership the website took a lot of work and a level of dedication that Mark, a full time journalist, did not have available. Late in 2002 he decided to take a break from the site as Editor and, after a few rudderless months and numerous auditions later, Rob Hobson took up the Editorial role just in time for Roman Abramovich’s takeover.

The rest you could say is history!
