Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is looking to get the club to push for a reunion for the Italian’s former attacker Dries Mertens, who has bagged 100 goals for Italian giants Napoli – that is according to Caughtoffside via Calciomercato.
Under Maurizio Sarri’s guidance the Belgian international bagged a sensational 34 goals in 46 games for Napoli, and the 31 year old has continued his rich vein of form this season with former Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti with 10 goals in 20 games.
Another big selling point would be to pair Dries Mertens with his international attacking partner Eden Hazard – the prospect of the two linking up and potentially bagging in the goals together would surely be more than enough to excite even the most ardent Chelsea fan.
The report however does pour cold water over a deal getting done quickly, if at all, with Dries Mertens ‘happy’ at Napoli and in no-rush to leave Italy for west London with the club second in Serie A behind leaders Juventus.
Chelsea aren’t likely to want to commit big funds to such a transfer with Mertens turning 32 in the Spring, so it will take some persuasion from Maurizio Sarri for the club to do a deal with Napoli, who are very unlikely to budge from a high transfer valuation.
The Blues are sweating over the fitness of Alvaro Morata after a knee injury sustained in the draw to MOL Vidi on Thursday, but it’s likely it’s not too serious for the striker.
