It was an early start for many Blues fans this morning. Tickets for the home leg against Barcelona went on sale at 8am and most supporters had to queue for at least two hours. An unusual pre-match ordeal.

Despite losing to Lazio spirits have lifted since the draw for the quarter-finals. The danger today was that it would affect the team’s performance.

The atmosphere at the game was very subdued and there was little to inspire the crowd in an insipid first half. Sutton missed Chelsea’s best chance while at the other end de Goey nearly made an embarrassing handling error to let the Saints in.

The second half was all Chelsea but for all the pressure chances were few and far between. But then Sutton lost possession and Southampton scored on the break.

It took a howler of an own goal by Dean Richards for Chelsea to equalise but still the Blues failed to create a goal of their own. Long day, bad result.
