In the match programme, Claudio Ranieri wrote that our 2-0 November defeat by Charlton was the team’s worst performance in his tenure as manager. He was not wrong. In fact, that defeat was one of the worst in living memory, and it has taken six months for our manager to restore any semblance of a reputation.

On Saturday’s performance, it is going to take a good while longer to win the fans over. Once again we were up against a well-drilled, hard-working impressive team – and once again we were found wanting.

While Manchester United and Liverpool hold no fear for us, put us up against a team like Charlton and we have no answer to their British bulldog style. When the likes of Charlton take six points off you, you cannot really pretend that you are Champions League material.
