CHELSEA 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON
Saturday was a day for returning heroes at Stamford Bridge. Dan Petrescu came back for the second time this season, this time with Southampton after his previous return with Bradford. It seems he just can’t stay away.
Tore Andre Flo was also back in west London, albeit in a non playing capacity. He was introduced to the crowd at half-time and got a great reception, as did Super Dan.
Chelsea should have scored early in the first half but Hasselbaink’s effort was was well saved then kicked off the line. But Gus Poyet scored near the end of the half with a
mishit shot that bounced over the ‘keeper.
The reception for the old boys was more entertaining than much of the football though. The second half was just as poor as the first but at least there were more chances. Petrescu cleared a Desailly header off the goal line and later missed the visitors’ clearest opportunity when he hit a tame left foot shot straight at Cudicini.
Jones produced a pair of fine saves late on, from Wise and Poyet, but in truth a second would have flattered Chelsea. Nevertheless, the push for Europe continues.
