CASL 91 Elite walked away as champions of the Under-16 Showcase Division in the Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea FC at  Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, Dec. 27-30.  The team from Raleigh, NC pulled off an upset that the young players will remember for the rest of their lives with a 2-1 win over the world-renowned Chelsea FC under-16 team. 

Trailing 1-0 entering the second half, Magnus Sorensen scored the first goal for CASL with a header over the outstretched hands of the Chelsea goalie at the 45th minute to tie the match.  Glenn Scott followed up eight minutes later to record the go-ahead goal at the 53rd minute mark.

“The goal was to reach the semi-finals, which is something this group of players has not done before, but to play Chelsea FC is all they were talking about and to do so we knew we had to reach the finals,” said CASL 91 head coach Rusty Scarborough. “To actually defeat them is extremely exciting and something they will cherish for the rest of their life.”

CASL 91 squeaked through pool play winning their first three matches by one goal each (4-1) and recorded the overtime 1-0 win over Solar 92 (Dallas, TX) in the semi-finals. 

“The team worked their buns off the first couple of days and I knew they were going to have a tough time after the overtime win this morning. I told them to cherish this opportunity and not to be nervous,” added coach Scarborough.

In the Under-17 Showcase Division, CASL Elite 90 defeated Andromeda 90 (Plano, TX), 1-0, in overtime to take home the trophy.  The team from Raleigh, NC, finished pool play 2-0-1, defeating Albion SC White (San Diego, CA), 2-1, Tulsa SC 91 (Tulsa, OK), 1-0, and tying their last match, 1-1, versus Blazers FC (Boston, MA). CASL advanced to the championship game with an easy 3-0 win over Concorde Fire Elite (Atlanta, GA)

More than 400 boys and girls teams including over 7,000 athletes, will participate in this year’s Disney’s Soccer Showcase presented by Chelsea FC.  The event voted by 300 of the top youth soccer coaches in the nation as the best youth soccer event in the country has become a hot recruiting event for college coaches with over 600 in attendance searching for the best players in the country.

Earlier this year, Chelsea and Disney’s Wide World of Sports announced a long-term partnership to help promote soccer at all levels in the United States. Part of that agreement was the creation of an annual educational exchange program where at least one Chelsea Soccer Academy teams will visit and compete at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.  Additionally, Chelsea will bring a group of all-stars selected from the Disney soccer tournament to compete and train at Chelsea FC Academy
