Salomon Kalou scored in Ivory Coast’s 4-2 victory over Serbia in Group A, in the Beijing Olympics on Sunday.  The Chelsea striker added the third goal to his team’s defeat of the Eastern Europeans, who are now bottom of Group A.

Furthermore the Ivory Coast have maintained hope of reaching the quarter-finals in China, as they recovered from a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in their opening match.  Sekou Cisse netted his second goal of the tournament on three minutes, before Serbia replied quickly via Milan Mrdakovic’s equaliser on 16 minutes.

However Serbian defender Slobodan Rajkovic headed in to his own net on 24 minutes to gift the Ivorians the lead for the second occasion at the Shanghai Olympic Stadium.  After a frenetic first-half, the pace dropped after the break, before Kalou ensured victory on 69 minutes, extending his side’s lead to 3-1.

Despite Serbia’s late consolation from Djordje Rakic on full-time, Gervinho sealed a 4-2 victory for the Ivorians in the fourth minute of injury time.  Meanwhile Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Australia sealed their place in the quarter-finals. They join Brazil, Italy and Norway who have already qualified for the last eight.
