CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CONUNDRUM

Chelsea play Bordeaux tonight for the return encounter in Group A of the Champions League.

The meeting back in September at Stamford Bridge saw Laurent Blanc’s side destroyed 4-0, with first half goals from Frank Lampard and Joey Cole added to after the break by Florent Malouda and then in stoppage time Nicolas Anelka tapped in Juliano Belletti’s long range effort.

There’s no denying that we’ve struggled away from home in the competition (a complete contrast of our domestic away form) but provided that we win tonight or in two weeks then qualification is ensured.

CFR Cluj host Roma in the groups other game, with Cluj grabbing a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Olyimpico in their reverse fixture.

Chelsea have Drogba for tonight, and Alex trains with the squad too and Miroslav Stoch has linked up with the first team squad.

Carvalho, Belletti and Di Santo are all ruled out injured and haven’t made the trip, Deco is suspended following his dismissal in Rome.

Bordeaux currently lie sixth in the French League, eight points off the top.

Frank De Bleeckere from Belgium is tonights ref.

What the outcome of tonights results mean to our qualification

Us winning…

A win for Chelsea and Roma would guarantee us qualification to the next round, and most likely Roma too, who won 3-1 away to Bordeaux and will host them at the start of December.

Us drawing…

And Cluj winning would make the points even tighter with us on 8 points, Bordeaux and Cluj both on 7 and Roma on 6.

And Roma winning would put us into second place going into the last matchday, Cluj would be out and for us to not go through we’d need to draw or lose to Cluj AND Bordeaux would need a win against Roma.

And Roma and Cluj drawing would leave things as they are now, with us needing a point from Cluj to ensure qualification.

Us losing…

If points are level qualification is worked out on results against each other.

Meaning a win for Bordeaux and Roma would set up an interesting last matchday, provided tonight we lose by three goals or less it means that Bordeaux must still beat Roma in two weeks to be assured qualification, a draw for them and us beating Cluj would result in both teams ending with ten points but us qualifying on results against each other.<-->
