Bolton visit the Bridge tomorrow for the League Cup fourth round, it was this round last season that we lost a penalty shootout and bowed out at home to Burnley.
In the last round we saw off QPR, in that match Ancelotti decided to field a makeshift side, and also choose to have a blend of very experienced and unexperienced players on the bench. Yuri Zhirkov made his debut, and as John Terry looked on from the bench Joey Cole captained the side.
Fabio Borini partnered Kalou up front, Ivanovic, Ferreira, Belletti and Hutchinson made up the back four, Mikel and Malouda joined Joey Cole and Zhirkov in the midfield. Hilario was also given the nod in goal, and I would expect he is again.
Lampard came on for Malouda at half time versus QPR with the match at a stalemate, we scored soon after, but to help ensure the win Ashley Cole came on for Zhirkov midway through the half and Terry came on for Hutchison for just under the last 15 minutes. Turnbull, Bruma, Matic and Essien were the unused subs that night.
For this reason it’s hard to predict what to expect tomorrow night, Bolton won on the weekend, and if Ancelotti wants to add the League Cup to the Community Shield, then to ensure we have a good chance of going through he may opt to start with a more experienced line up then last time.
Ashley Cole and Bosingwa are out, Alex and Zhirkov are back. With Alex playing for the reserves last week, I’d expect him to start this match, especially given Carvalho being subbed on Saturday, possibly as a precaution as he took a knock earlier in the game.
Wanderers beat West Ham at the Reebok stadium in the last round, the hosts went a goal down and looked to be running out of time, but Davies forced extra time by equalising with four minutes of normal time left to play. Extra time goals from Gary Cahill and Johan Elmander put the Trotters in the fourth round draw. On the weekend they won 3-2 at home to Everton.
The last time we played Bolton we were 4-0 up at home and it was going smoothly, Guus brought off Lamps and Didier to rest them before the Liverpool Champions League quarter final, and remarkably we let in three late goals, and had a nervy final few minutes. The season before we drew 1-1 at home on the last day of the season, knowing that a win could have potentially of delivered us the title. The season before (06/07) and also in Jose’s first season we drew 2-2 at home to them both times.
Prediction – We’ve been scoring a lot more in the last couple of matches, but may have a makeshift team.
4-1 to Chelsea
