Chelsea wrapped up the long awaited signings of both Wigan’s Victor Moses and Marseille’s Spanish international right back, Cesar Azpilicueta. Both players were officially announced and paraded by the club before our 2-0 win over Newcastle at the Bridge on Saturday. So whether you were in favour of these signings or not, it is now time to get behind the new boys as they prepare to put that royal blue shirt on for the first time.

So apart from value for money, what else will these two players offer us?

As I’m sure most of you are aware, I am a keen admirer of Victor Moses and always have been. At only 21-years of age, he has matured beyond his years and proved his worth at Premier League level, albeit it for Wigan. Roberto Di Matteo has stated that two of his qualities that attracted him to making the signing were his pace and his wide play. Chelsea have looked somewhat narrow during the opening stages of the season and although it has worked, there will be times where we would need a fast winger to penetrate the defence in other ways.

Moses has a lot to improve on, his crossing isn’t always the best, but he’s still developing. He has ambition and confidence, the type of player that will take his man on and offer something a little bit different. He’ll give us the kind of flair that a young Joe cole used to offer. Predominantly I feel he’ll be used from the bench to begin with, but he will have his chance to prove his worth. I hope he shows the patience to succeed with us and that we don’t see another talented youngster waste away on the bench.

Far from a panic buy, Chelsea has been pursuing Moses for some time now and they rate him highly, there is no question about that. He has versatility and can operate anywhere across the front line and in a deeper attacking midfield role, so that is a bonus for sure. I’m happy with this signing and think we have captured a very exciting talent that will get the Stamford Bridge faithful to their feet on many occasions.

As for our new right back, what a talent we have acquired here. Azpilicueta or ‘Dave’ as he has been humorously named by some of the Chelsea supporters who struggle to pronounce his real name, will be an instant hit. This young Spaniard has so much potential and is another one who looks more mature than his actual age.

Chelsea will use Dave as our right back option when playing lesser opponents or in must win matches. He offers pace, stamina and a match engine that will see him hitting both by-line’s with ease. He is an ‘Ashley Cole type full back’. By that I mean, he enjoys attacking as well as defending and he will be up and back whilst being hugely affective in both halves of the pitch. Offering a sweet right foot he has a great cross on him and will be feeding the likes of Fernando Torres from wide, which is another option we will have. He will rotate with Ivanovic in that position and will have to work hard to keep his spot, but it’s a great problem to have for us.

So the key word to sum up both of these latest signings would be ‘options’. Last season we lacked attacking imagination, this season we have an impressive set of options to keep opposition on their toes.

With the transfer window ending on Saturday, It will be no surprise if these two do not get joined by yet another new face, watch this space….
