We recently conducted a poll at CFCnet via our followers on Twitter and it contains some very interesting results. Chelsea supporters in Twittersville have been giving their opinions on this all day and bringing up some names that I’m sure some of you have forgotten even existed.

It is not the names in the poll that will surprise you the most however, it is the player who is crowned as our worst signing of the last 5 years, according to our poll. We shall start from the players who received the most votes and we’ll end with our winner (loser) of the survey.

Romelu Lukaku – 1 vote received

A surprising addition to say the least, our current West Brom loanee has barely had a chance to prove that he is worth the £18 million that we paid for him yet and definitely shouldn’t be on this list, not just yet anyway, a rather premature vote this one.

Ricardo Quaresma (loan), Khalid Boulahrouz, Ross Turnbull, Steve Sidwell, Gael Kakuta – 6 votes each received

I was surprised to see Kakuta get so many votes, but I understand as it was stated that he was being voted because we almost got in a lot of trouble for apparently tapping the player up. Steve Sidwell was certainly a strange signing for me, rather like a panic buy, although he did arrive on a free so maybe a decent squad purchase. We paid over £8 million for Boulahrouz and he only played 13 matches, so a non debatable addition.

Tal Ben Haim, Yuri Zhirkov and Claudio Pizarro – 7 votes each received

Both Ben Haim and Pizarro were signed on free transfers, but both were seen as backup players. Zhirkov however might possibly have been higher up this list, costing the club £18 million, although they did recuperate some of that money two years after when he joined Russian side Anzhi for a fee close to £13 million. Still, his time at Chelsea can only be described as a frustrating disappointment as the player had been hyped up so much before he joined.

Mineiro – 8 votes received

Sorry who? Who is Mineiro? Well, he is a former Brazilian international that last played in the German fourth division. The holding midfielder was signed by Chelsea in 2008 as a third backup choice in that position. He featured just twice for us, only starting one game. So deservedly he has joined the list that no player wants to be part of.

Andriy Shevchenko – 9 votes received

Recently retired ‘Sheva’ was always a class player, even proving his abilities during his bowing out international tournament during this summers Euro’s, playing a pinnacle role for Ukraine. But Chelsea seem to have a curse, the striker curse. We seem to have the ability to turn even the very best of strikers, into League 2 quality wannabe’s. This is what happened with the great Shevchenko. Signed by Chelsea form Milan in 2006 for £30 million of your finest english pounds, he had just finished a stint that saw him score 127 goals in 208 appearances, an impressive record that understandably caused great excitement amongst the Stamford Bridge faithful. but the curse struck, he completely flopped and only managed a dire 9 goals in 47 matches. Deservedly causing him to feature this high up in such a poll.

Yossi Benayoun – 12 votes received

Personally, when I constructed the idea for this poll, I thought he would win hands down, so it was with no surprise to see him get second place. Poor poor Yossi, he’s been passed around more than a Barcelona match ball and hasn’t ever quite made the cut. Signed by Chelsea in 2010 for £5.5 million from Liverpool he has since only managed 8 appearances and has spent the majority of his time advertising himself on Gumtree. Still registered as a Chelsea player, the 32-year-old now has another season on loan, with yet another London club, West Ham United.

Finally, I present to you, Chelsea’s worst signing of the last 5 years – Fernando Torres – 13 votes received.

Firstly I was surprised to see that he won this poll, but then when you think about it, there really is no other choice for this particular poll. This certainly means I am not writing him off, as everyone who logs onto CFCnet knows, I’m a huge admirer of Torres, writing him off would be a mugs game, I still feel he can re-discover the form that made him one of the best strikers in the world.

81 goals Nando scored for Liverpool in just 142 matches, a great record. But for Chelsea, not so impressive, since he signed for £50 million in 2010 he has managed just 15 goals in 71 matches.

It’s back, the old cliched ‘curse of the Chelsea strikers’. It seems Torres too had been struck by the curse, but is there a cure? Only time will tell.

The fact that he has failed to make an impact within his 2 years as a Chelsea player, and the £50 million Chelsea paid for him, clearly makes him our worst signing of the last 5 years in terms of both performances and value for money, but can he be the man to finally break the Chelsea striker curse? Or will Abramovich be sending out an SOS for that man Radamel Falcao? If he does, then let’s hope the curse doesn’t get him as well.
