Firstly, we’d like to wish Victor Moses, John Obi Mikel and all of our Nigerian fellow blues supporters, a very Happy Independence Day to you all. Its a special day for the Nigerians and a special day for our own boys Mikel and Moses.
Supporters from around the world are hugely important to a club like Chelsea, a world famous club with huge ambitions need the support of the world and not just the English die hard fans who go to games week in week out, which is also just as appreciated by the club. We unite as a team, we are all Chelsea family together, we all bleed blue blood, suffer and re-joice as a unit.
Another celebration today is for the family and friends of a certain former blue, a footballing legend, a player who had one of the most feared shots in football, Liberian legend George Weah, who is celebrating his 46th Birthday today. Happy Birthday George!
Finally, the last celebration of today, our very own current blue, Ireland international Conor Clifford celebrates his 21st birthday today, so a huge congratulations goes out to you as well Conor!
Some slightly more concerning news is that our best left back in the world has still not signed a new contract with us, provoking growing speculation surrounding PSG’s alleged move for him. It has been reported that they are all set to pre-agree a deal with Cole, that will see him move to France in the summer on a free when his current contract runs out. Fortunately at this stage, speculation is all it is.
I’d be shocked if Chelsea allowed this to happen, after all he is still only 31-years-old and has at least 2 years left of the highest standard. But here at Chelsea we have a policy, we do not offer any player who is over the age of 30, more than a 1-year-contract extension and it seems there has been a disagreement involving the length of the contract being offered to Ashley, along with the fee not meeting his demands. We must up our offer and seal the contract, for at least another year.
On the upside, we do have one of the finest young players in England right now waiting in the wings to take over, in the shape of the ever impressive Ryan Bertrand, so all would not be lost.
Meanwhile, the reports regarding Chelsea’s interest in Cristiano Ronaldo are ever growing. It has been reported recently that his stated ‘sadness’ is over Madrid not being prepared to offer the wages that he desires, thus making him look elsewhere to earn his trade. The reports say that only Chelsea, PSG and Manchester City will be able to afford his high wages and the player himself wants to return to the Premier League. I’ll keep a close eye on this one during the coming months but I believe we have more realistic targets to pursue in the shape of Marouane Fellaini and Radamel Falcao.
Finally, tomorrow we continue our defiant defence of the Champions League with a visit to Denmark to face unknown Nordsjaelland and it is thought that Di Matteo will be resting some players. I expect to see Frank Lampard returning to the starting line-up after a good rest, along with possible starts for Gary Cahill, Victor Moses and Marko Marin. Romeu and Azpilicueta might also get an opportunities to start.
Lucas Piazon has already tweeted that he is at least in the squad for tomorrow, confirming that he was boarding the flight to Denmark today. I believe he will once again be given another chance to impress after already showing his pure talent this season in the match against Wolves. I’m sure we will see a substitute appearance for our young Brazilian.
