A quick fire update for you guys during the frantic opening days of the January transfer window.

Well, we all know the situation with Newcastle striker Demba Ba, I am in the same boat as you, awaiting confirmation. I am hearing that it will be official by the end of the week, so tomorrow hopefully. As regards to whether he’ll be available for selection in time for our next game, who knows, I doubt it, but you never know.

According to AS, who can be hit or miss regarding transfer rumours, Chelsea are looking to re-ignite their interest in Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain. They state that Roman Abramovich is willing to pay around £23 million for his services. This isn’t the first time he has been talked about with Chelsea, the solid interest first became apparent about four weeks ago. I’m sure there is interest from us, certainly one to keep an eye on.

Meanwhile, we have been linked with another Real Madrid player, left back Fabio Coentrao. Again, not for this first time. Initially reports say that the unsettled defender would be looking to leave Madrid in the summer, but today’s reports are suggesting that it could well be January when he makes his move away from La Liga. I wouldn’t read too much in to this just yet. Yes they player has become somewhat unhappy with the pressure on him at such a big club and yes we have been watching him as a potential replacement for Ashley Cole, but I would be surprised if this happened as soon as January, if at all.

Finally, a new name who actually hasn’t been linked with us before (as far as I know). Roma defender Marquinhos. Gazetta Giallo Rossa have reported that Chelsea are ready to pay around £20 million for the 18-year-old Brazilian. We could do with extra cover at the back and Marquinhos is an excellent prospect, but with the likes of Chalobah and Kalas impressing within the youth ranks, I don’t feel we need to fork out that high amount and should prioritise another striker.
