Demba Ba scored a wonder goal to send Chelsea into the semi-final of the FA Cup at the expense of Manchester United today.

Ba, starting ahead of Fernando Torres, hit a sweet strike shortly after half time from an overhead ball by Juan Mata.

The ball left him with a lot to do but the striker guided the ball expertly past David de Gea.

It proved to be the only goal of the game as Robin van Persie missed two good opportunities for the away side.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech also made one of the saves of the season to deny Javier Hernandez from close range.

The first half was quiet as both teams were putting defence first – both having conceded nine in the last three meetings between the sides.

Ba, fantastic after the break, was quiet but forced the best save of the half with a snap shot at David de Gea’s front post.

Eden Hazard also had a chance to test the Man Utd keeper but failes to hit the target from the edge of the box.

At the other end Nani and then Javier Hernandez both came close with long range shots – the former forcing an awkward save from Petr Cech.

The 1-0 scoreline was a surprise for many with the last three games between the sides resulting in 18 goals.

The result means Chelsea now face Manchester City in the semi final at Wembley.

Man Utd, meanwhile, only have the league to play for now and will have been disappointed to be knocked out of a competition they haven’t won since 2004.

Chelsea face a tough semi final but will be confident having won the FA Cup four times in the last six seasons.
