Chelsea have had a strange summer in terms of transfer activity and the count down to the final few days of the market being open, is expected to continue with the madness. It has been announced that two attackers from Anzhi have joined, Willian has been officially presented and Samuel Eto’o is expected to be confirmed as official by the club today, once his medical is completed.

Jose Mourinho had stated a number of coinciding quotes regarding transfers, he had previously said that Chelsea would only be making one more signing (Rooney) and then only a week later it was announced that they had pipped Willian over his move to Tottenham during his medical at Spurs. This caught everyone unaware and although the Brazilian winger had been on The Blues shortlist, no reporters or sources had any idea that he would join Chelsea this summer. Another quote that Mourinho had stated was regarding open target Wayne Rooney. Mourinho has already had two bids rejected by United for the England International, but he did say he would make one more offer for him after the two sides met on Monday evening. This did not happen, thus leaving Mourinho defeated in his pursuit and resulted in the signing of Eto’o.

It was expected that Roman Abramovich had authorised over £40 million to be available for Rooney as well as the £25 million already spent on Willian. Reports on Thursday morning are suggesting that Mourinho is ready to forget Rooney until next summer and could well be engineering a couple more late surprise signings, and the people in the business are working hard to find out who these might be. There have been a number of players still being mentioned with Chelsea including more strikers in the shape of Jackson Martinez, Luis Suarez, Angel Di Maria, Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski. I have even heard reputable journalists mention the name Mario Balotelli, who might possibly be interested in a return to the Premier League, having some unfinished business here. I have also heard this morning that Mourinho is still looking to spend at least another £25 million before the window shuts, take that as you will.

We already know that the signing of Porto winger Christian Atsu is expected to be completed imminently, but with that considered, is there still a lot more money left waiting in the pot, ready to be spent in the next few days?

The sudden desperation to sign players could well be as a result of witnessing the happenings at Manchester United and Tottenham, who are both looking to make a number of market signings before the window shuts, especially the latter, who are making a whole array of top class signings putting Spurs up there with the top four in terms of the squad on paper.

Meanwhile, Juan Mata and David Luiz are both staying firmly put at Stamford Bridge, according to both players and manager, quashing rumours of both players leaving to make way for new players. However, possible casualties are likely to be Demba Ba and Victor Moses who will both go out on loan now this season.

Gareth Bale looks all but certain to join Real Madrid now as the move is all but complete. There are other teams monitoring this situation though but it looks certain that Daniel Levy will only sell abroad, even though Manchester United would love to bring him to Old Trafford. But were Chelsea the other club watching this situation? Who knows after what we have already witnessed this summer!
