Tuesday 6 August
Hendon FC 0:1 Chelsea U21
The under 21 squad finished the pre-season with a couple of goals from Josh McEachran and Ben Pattie (on trial) that meant our build up to the campaign end undefeated.
Weirdly, Jody Morris and Jon Harley were both back in Chelsea shirts for the evening

Wednesday 7 August
Chelsea 1:3 Real Madrid
In the small hours it ended in defeat as we couldn’t take our chances and allowed Ronaldo too much time and space. Ramires scored our goal to equalise an early strike but Ronaldo’s contribution proved that, however talented, this lost still roll around for free-kicks and are generally charmless.
The fitness will have been important with Mourinho playing most of the XI past the 70-minute mark and confirming that those who did not start tonight will do so in New York on Saturday against Roma. Frank Lampard gave everyone a boost by completing his first action of the new term; he even banged in a few meaty shots to get the rust out of the system.
This defeat was perfect said Mourinho as it gave the team things to work on in training. That probably means double shifts for the midfield in picking up runners.
In the real world, Manchester United have turned down another bid for Wayne Rooney. Rumoured to be about £25m it seems United cannot stomach becoming a selling club and will drag the matter on until Rooney puts pen to paper on a transfer request.
No snickering about his supposed ability to put pen to paper – he is almost our player and we’ll have to can all those years of ridicule and abuse.
Not going anywhere is David Luiz – Barcelona came calling with about £35m but Mourinho showed them the door. Unaware of how like Moyes he sounded.
A quick poll: would you rather keep Luiz and miss Rooney or the other way round?

Friday 9 August
Chelsea U21 2:4 Tottenham Hotspur U21
Not the start we were looking for but second-half injuries restricted our chance to bounce back,
Josh McEachran scored a penalty for the opener at a packed Recreation Ground but three Spurs goals before the break blew the match out of the water. Izzy Brown scored his first competitive goal for Chelsea in the second-half but there was no way back.
Meanwhile, Nathan Ake has been rewarded for his great season with a five-year contract.
Lucas Piazon is off to Vitesse for the season. He is still only 19 and made three impressive first-team appearances last term before a loan with Malaga. He will do well in the Netherlands.
Jhon Perez has rejoined Leganes on loan for the duration. The 20-year-old scored a couple in 10 appearances for the Spanish second division side last season.

Saturday 10 August
Chelsea 2:1 AC Roma
An equaliser from Frank Lampard and a late winner from Romelu Lukaku saw us back on track in the last game of our pre-season. Ultimately the games mean nothing next to the fitness and sharpness the players can get out of them and this pre-season has been encouraging in both respects.
Juan Mata was unable to play and looks like he will not be fit for the start of the campaign but David Luiz and Frank Lampard both played a part suggesting almost all of the squad are there or thereabouts.
Michael Essien almost opened the scoring on the back of an early thrilling break but the half could not live up to that promise. The goal we conceded goes down as the clumsiest in recent memory. A simple back pass bobbled, evaded the ’keeper, bouncing off the post and fell to Lamela to smash in. 0-1. Youngsters, we believe, have redubbed this kind of misfortune as a fail. We could not comment further.
Frank blasted us back into the match from 25 yards out. 1-1. It was in the dying moments when Hazard danced through the entire defence and Lukaku shinned the winner. 2-1.
At Old Trafford and with most of their first-team rested because of tomorrow’s charity shindig, Manchester United lost to Sevilla 1-3. It was not what the paying thousands expected and the sight of Marco Marin scoring the second raised a few blue laughs.

Sunday 11 August
Manchester United and Wigan played out the Community Chest in front of a less than full Wembley. Wayne Rooney was not in the former squad.
