Schurrle scores against Fulham

Well that’s another game gone, another game closer to the title and one less game for our title rivals to gain points on us. Yesterday, it took a 16 minute Schurrle hat-trick to see off our West London rivals Fulham who look in deep trouble at the foot of the table. Again, not for the first time this season we had a game of two halves, one in which we were very average and one whereby we looked like we could go on and win the title.

Fulham are now in deep trouble, being 5 points from safety, teams around them having played less games and have not won in 8 games. However, I am in agreement with Mourinho, I do want them to stay up just so we can have a West London derby. The only positive for Fulham is there remaining fixtures, they have 10 games to go and can arguable win 5/6 of them. Is Felix Magath the right man to steer them to safety? In all honesty I do not know much about him. He has a pretty good CV with quite a few success stories on it, but does he have enough time to keep Fulham in the division?

Chelsea were able to turn the game from nervously looking for a goal to a comfortable win in a short 16 minutes. In those 16 minutes Hazard and Schurrle really came out and sent a message to the league. Seeing Schurrle finish off chances how he did yesterday really made me think about could he be deployed as a centre forward more often. I know it was only one game, but it’s not the for the first time this season he has taken a game by the scruff of the neck and got us the win. He also showed us the composure that Torres and Eto’o haven’t been able to do for us. The second goal was excellent centre forward play that Torres should of been doing, making a run across their back four knowing Hazard will have the quality to put the ball on a plate for you to finish.

This could be a knee jerk reaction to Schurrle’s hat-trick but playing him as a centre forward could give us more flexibility when going forward. We can all see the boy can finish but he also has the ability to drift out wide and produce better wing play than an Eto’o or Torres can. Spain and Barcelona have tried this with them playing a False 9 and I always thought they missed a real focal point in attack. So if Schurrle was to play centre forward it is vital he does give us a focal point and like yesterday makes those run across the back four and let the likes of Hazard, Willian and Oscar to find him.

So, 10 games to go and could be 9 points clear of City the next time they play. Being 9 points clear would put huge pressure on them to perform knowing they can’t drop points anywhere. But like Mourinho has stated it is still in City’s hands, if they win their remaining games they will win the league.
