David Luiz in action against PSG

While there is no denying that Chelsea’s hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-finals were dealt a huge blow following the 3-1 defeat to Paris, it might not yet be over for Jose Mourinho’s men. The Betfair odds may still have the Premier League side as the underdogs to overturn the 3-1 scoreline at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea fans will have been rightly delighted to hear Zlatan Ibrahimovic won’t be in the line-up for the second leg.

The PSG top-scorer will miss his side’s trip to London after suffering a thigh injury in the second half of the 3-1 victory at the Parc des Princes, ruling him out of action for four weeks at a time when the French champions really need him. While the Parisians will still head across The Channel confident following their comfortable home win, that confidence will have been dented following the news their talisman will be an notable absentee from the team-sheet on Tuesday.

The news was announced by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who said “He (Zlatan) is doing an MRI now. I think he will need a minimum of four weeks (out of action). It’s impossible for him to play (in the second leg).”

With Betfair odds of 5/2 to qualify for the semi-finals, Chelsea are still a very interesting bet heading into the second leg. While Ibrahimovic wasn’t one of the three goalscorers in Paris, his influence to this PSG side is clear for all to see. Despite their star-studded squad, Laurent Blanc’s men are a different beast without the Swedish striker and Chelsea could have seen their chance to surprise more than a few Betfair punters and still go on and reach the semi-finals.

The 2012 Champions League winners are still alive in this tournament and PSG could do well to remember that when they head to Stamford Bridge for the second leg.
