Monday 14 July
Luiz Felipe Scolari has stepped aside to allow a new broom in Brazilian football. His contract was up in any case but he seemed to want to take responsibility for his country’s failings.
Tuesday 15 July
Diego Costa has finalised his five-year contract and is officially one of us. Yes, we thought that had happened already too.
Wednesday 16 July
Wycombe Wanderers 0:5 Chelsea
This was a breezy start to first-team friendlies; youth to the fore, Chelsea dissected the Chairboys in a testimonial to mark Matt Bloomfield’s ten years at the club..
Much is expected of Patrick Bamford and the youngster delivered a committed performance and a subtle finish as he got across the defender and the near post to flick in Nathan Ake’s cross. 0-1.
Chances were hard to find in the first period but Chelsea’s determined play meant no penetration for the hosts.
Izzy Brown came on at the half and instantly thrashed the ball into the top corner for 0-2. John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic helped themselves to 0-3 and 0-4 before Brown repeated his long range effort to round off the scoring.
Kurt Zouma looks the real deal on tonight’s evidence. He is a bigun, fast and leaps like a salmon, with a few rough edges off he’ll be a great asset.
The only black spot on the night was the serious looking injury suffered by Todd Kane. It is early in the season and we wish him well.
If Liverpool’s sole tactic is to buy the Southampton squad this summer we seem to be doing the same with Atlético: the Brazilian left-back Filipe Luis is on his way as the clubs agreed terms.
Besiktas have been talking to Demba Ba about a loan deal but Chelsea are looking for cash.
Thursday 17 July
Oriol Romeu signed a new contract keeping him at the Bridge until 2017. Signed originally in 2011 the Spanish U21 international ruptured a knee shortly afterwards and spent last season on loan at Valencia.
Demba Ba looks likely to be a Besiktas player for around £8m having passed a medical and tweeted his arrival in Istanbul.
Friday 18 July
Aldershot 2:3 Chelsea U21
Lots of returning loanees made for an unfamiliar line-up and they were at sixes and sevens falling 2-0 behind before Charlie Colkett headed one back before the break.
Finding their feet in the second-half at the familiar Elektro-Dienstleistungen Stadion (the Recreation ground of old) Stipe Perica headed us level before Ruben Sammut poked the winner.
The U21s now fly to Austria for a training camp and a game against Red Bull Salzburg.
Filipe Luis is officially here while Demba Ba has joined Besiktas for about £4,7m according to reports to the Turkish stock exchange. Demba had few chances to shine at the Bridge but did score that goal against PSG that set us all dreaming in the April night air.
Brazilian international Luis will cost around £17m from Atlético as manager Jose Mourinho declares that summer spending is at an end.
Saturday 19 July
AFC Wimbledon 2:3 Chelsea
John Terry played the unlikely role of saviour as we found ourselves back at Kingsmeadow on a Saturday afternoon. Old hands remember plenty of trips to what is now the Kirschrot Rekord Stadion, or something like that,
Reserve games used to take place here before the birth of AFC Wimbledon so old hands like John Terry know the place well.
Not well enough to be wary of early corners as the smallest man on the pitch headed the hosts ahead, or for Kurt Zouma to quite get his eye in as his first few tackles were hard but fair but his fourth inside the box. We trailed by two at the break.
Enter the conquering hero, John Terry was in the right place to stab home our first, Mohamed Salah’s determination won him the leveller before Terry’s late header. Lewis Baker delivered the balls into the box for Terry’s goals and the through ball for Salah. The young midfielder, who did so much to get noticed last season is already showing his class this.
Chelsea U18 4:1 Luton Town U18
Really hot and humid at Cobham but this very young side controlled the game and ran out easy winners.
Ike Ugbo scored an impressive hat-trick and Ruben Sammut added another to his scoring start at Aldershot.
