Schurrle celebrates his second goal

France almost didn’t turn up for their own funeral in the Maracana. Baking hot and humid as hell and still Germany stretched their legs controlled the ball and the game and left with an easy win and a few hours off to watch Brazil strain every emotional muscle to join them in a semi-final next Tuesday in Belo Horizonte.

Germany grabbed an early lead when Mats Hummels easily got the better of Rafael Varane to head in a simple goal. 0-1.

France had dazzled a few on their way to the semi-final but this German side is stronger and more confident than any other team here and they controlled the ball and French breaks with ease.
Germany have a spine of Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm and Thomas Müller and the supporting cast is so good that Andre Schürrle starts on the bench.

Schürrle came on just after the hour and had one glorious chance to secure German progress but he scuffed his chance from 18-yards and Lloris gathered easily. His second chance late on was easily blocked.

France mustered a few late peeps but when it came to it Benzema shot weakly at Neuer and that was France – weak and unimaginative.
