Freak results happen and Mourinho will ensure that his charges learn from this setback. In truth Chelsea were second best and Tottenham deserved their win. The telling damage was done at the end of the first half as spurs scored twice in as many minutes to lead 3-1 at the break.
It all started so well for Chelsea and they deservedly took the lead after eighteen minutes when Costa tapped in an Oscar cross following good work by Hazard. The home side were level, against the run of play, as the impressive harry Kane equalised with a fine strike past the hapless Courtois. Then two quick fire goals from Rose and Townsend turned the clash on its head.
Mourinho introduced Ramires for the second half and Tottenham decided to surrender the initiative and defend their half. However Chelsea’s onslaught was brought to a shuddering stop when Kane netted his second after 52 minutes. Chelsea were always going to be vulnerable with both Matic and Fabregas pushing forward.  Hazard gave the blues a glimmer of hope after the hour to make the score 4-2 but that light was extinguished by Chadli when he beat Courtois to put the tie beyond Chelsea. Terry got a consolation in the dying minutes to set up a nervy finale but Tottenham held firm to collect the three points.
Chelsea were undone by Tottenham’s high pressing game with Kane particularly impressive. However Chelsea will learn from this and move on as all good teams do. The extraordinary amount of games that players are asked to play over the festive period is not good for anyone. Fans are unhappy with travel chaos and the expense s involved, players are tired both physically and mentally and managers can only pray that they will have enough fit players for each tie. This has to be looked at by the Premier League.
If anyone had told me that we would be top of the league, in to the knockout phases of the champions League and in the semi finals of the Capital One cup on the 1st of January 2015 I would have snatched their hands off. Heads up and when we beat Watford and Newcastle all will be rosy again at the Bridge.
