According to Spanish press, Chelsea are looking at the options to bring in a decent understudy for Nemanja Matic in the shape of Alex Song, as John Obi Mikel’s future at The Bridge looks uncertain.

Mikel has hardly featured for Jose Mourinho’s side this season and is in a position where he must now move to seek first team football as he reaches the peak end of his career. Matic has nailed down that position for Chelsea this season and has featured regularly.

Barcelona’s 27-year-old midfielder Song is seen as a decent option to come in and compete with Matic to provide a top class alternative in that role.

Song is currently on loan at West Ham this season and his future remains unclear. The Spanish giants will look to ship him out this summer and redeem some money for him. Money is also a drive behind Chelsea’s pursuit as they look to compete with financial fair play and spend their big money elsewhere. It is thought that a fee of under £10 million will be enough to see Barcelona part ways.

In a season where Chelsea’s squad rotation and size has been questioned a number of times, it would make sense if they did move for a player like Song at that price, especially is Mikel does make an exit.
