Major League Soccer sides LA Galaxy, New York Red Bulls and San Jose Earthquakes will also participate in the tournament. Club America, from Mexico will also take part.
Manchester United will be defending a trophy that they won last year, after cruising through to the finals. A match between Manchester United and Spanish giants Real Madrid, played in Michigan, attracted a record crowd of 109,000. Manchester United won the fixture 3-1 in a display that emphasized the club’s support in the United States.
Dates for the tournament, on its third year, have not been finalized and announced. It is expected that the tournament is unlikely to finish as late as it did last summer when the finals were played between Manchester United and Liverpool in August 4th. Last year, Luis Van Gaal, Manchester United’s manager was very critical of his team’s five match schedule at the tournament. He argued that the tournament ended so late that the club did not have ample time to prepare for the start of the English Premier League. It is reported that Van Gaal sought assurances on the dates of this summer’s championship tournament, and wants his team to be away for a maximum of two weeks and back before start of August. This, it is believed, is because of the expected early start of the Premier League 2015-2016 season.
Richard Arnold, Manchester United group managing director, is quoted expressing his delight at the planned return of the club to the United States. He took pride in that history was made by Manchester United when one of their matches last year broke soccer attendance record in the country. The club enjoys a huge level of support in the many cities in United States. He further added that the tournament would provide Manchester United with preparation for the next season, while allowing many of United’s estimated eight million fans in the country an opportunity to get closer to the club and its players.
Chelsea Chairman, Bruce Buck, when confirming Chelsea’s attendance to the tournament, said that he was delighted that the side would face top quality clubs in the International Champions Cup this summer. Chelsea will be in the United States for the eighth time in 12 years, and the Chairman believes there is a strong support in the Country for Chelsea. He emphasized his belief that the facilities that will be used for the International Champions Cup are of the best quality. Chelsea, he said, would use the tournament to prepare for the start of next season. The club would also be extending the work of the Chelsea Foundation during that visit.
