Yesterday, Barcelona announced their signing of Atletico Madrid stalwart, Arda Turan. After weeks of reports, links, and tweets, the Turkish international ended up staying in Spain. One of the teams linked with Turan was Chelsea and they’re worse off for not signing him.

The 28-year-old would have added a lot to Mourinho’s squad, not just numbers but real quality. Turan is a top tier player, brimming with creativity and pure quality. He is also a top notch defender, a skill which is required by Mourinho.

Chelsea would have done well to sign the Turkish international. He would have been a strong option for Mourinho in the No. 10 role, along with the right wing. His move to Barcelona is a major loss for the Blues, who at one point seemed as though they had the player within their grasp.

Chelsea must now choose a different target to pursue this offseason. In a summer where several teams look to be adding quality in numbers, Chelsea have yet to make any marquee moves. If they are to remain competitive in the Premier League, while increasing their performance in Europe, it’s absolutely vital to add a big name player or two this summer. Who will be Chelsea’s next Fabregas?
