Good Afternoon Blues and welcome to Friday’s edition of Chelsea Fresh, where we take a look at the latest news, transfer rumours and anything else in between at Stamford Bridge.
Well, yesterday we spoke about the injury to Thibaut Courtois that will make him miss Saturday’s big game at Goodison Park, but it appears that the knee injury picked up during training could well be a lot worse than first anticipated.
Jose Mourinho confirms that Courtois ‘will be out for a quite a long time’ and will require surgery after damaging his medial ligaments. There are various reports but unfortunately I have read some claiming that he’ll be out until Christmas.
There is no doubt that this is a huge blow for Chelsea, Courtois is a great figure at the back and one of the best keepers in world football. Not ideal after making such a poor start to the season.
Asmir Begovic will naturally be starting as the number one now for the foreseeable future and lucky for Chelsea he is a keeper of similar stature and has great experience to step up. I am sure he will thrive on the opportunity and a chance of staking a claim for the number one spot. It will also be an opportunity for youth player Jamal Blackman to cover at the number two spot.
Meanwhile, according to Le 10 Sport, Paris Saint Germain defender Marquinhos is becoming consistently more frustrated at the Ligue 1 side and could be willing to push through a move away from France.
Having been left out of the starting eleven by Manager Laurent Blanc in these early stages, he may well ask for a move in January. The Brazil defender was subject to a deadline day £30 million bid from Chelsea that was rejected by his club, but Chelsea will certainly be looking closely at this situation and the interest is still very much there.
