Thibaut Courtois has claimed that he is “close” to signing a new contract at Chelsea and that he is happy at the club (via Sky Sports).

After his wonderful performance against Arsenal on Wednesday night, Thibaut Courtois’ importance to Chelsea cannot be understated.

The Belgian goalkeeper pulled off a string of wonderful saves, particularly in the first-half to keep the score at 0-0.

There has been some doubt about the 25-year-old’s future but now, Courtois has provided Chelsea fans with a welcome update.

“I’m happy at Chelsea and a deal is close,” he said after the match.

“Has it been a distraction? Not for me. I’m just calm and relaxed, because I’m tied to Chelsea. Despite the rumours and everything, I am focused on Chelsea and I’m happy here.”

Courtois’ deal expires next year but he isn’t the only key player in that boat. Eden Hazard’s contract runs out the year after but we could be in for some good news on that front too.

“Do Eden and I encourage each other to sign? Yes. He will say ‘if you sign, I will sign’ and I say the same to him. I think we are both happy at Chelsea, we both have a good part to play.

“We have been champions twice in the four seasons I have been here and can have our peak years together at Chelsea.”

That’s great news for Chelsea fans. Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard are perhaps the two most important players at the club so it’s good to see that they are committed to remaining at the Bridge.
