With fresh new sources surfacing today that Chelsea have gone back in with a £25 million bid for German attacker Andre Shurrle, it is sure to test the reserve of Bayer Leverkusen officials, as they struggle to keep hold of their prize asset.
Here at CFCnet, we have decided to take a deeper look into the player to see what he can bring to the club, compare him with our other option Hulk, and see if we can get past the narrow minded views of Andre’s recent under performances at the Euro’s, where amazingly he is being judged on two short substitute appearances.
So who is he and where has he come from? He is a 21-year-old German international who currently boasts an impressive 16 appearances for Germany, scoring 7 goals. He joined Leverkusen in 2011 after catching the eye with a very successful spell at Mainz, where he scored 20 goals in 66 appearances.
He is said to be one of the golden boys coming fresh out of the German grass roots coaching system, which is one of the most impressive in the world and constantly produces absolute gems.
Andre plays predominantly on the left wing, but he also plays on the right wing, and as a forward. He has two good feet and is excellent at cutting inside from the wing, firing in shots.
Recently at Leverkusen he has been criticised on his finishing not being as prolific as when he was at Mainz, although he still managed to get 7 goals in 31 matches.
At youth level he has had a superb record, at under-19 and under-21, he holds 16 appearances, scoring 15 times, pretty much a goal a game, which is truly incredible. Understandably he was bought into the senior squad as soon as possible, still only being 21.
So what will he bring to Chelsea and is he better than Hulk? He is similar to Hulk apart from his build, he is lighter weight, but still has a strong frame. He is quick and has good stamina like Hulk. Andre is also frightening to full backs; he likes to get at them, again, similar to Hulk. He is just as inclined to cut in and score goals like the Brazilian man too.
The only thing Hulk has is a proven successful ability over many years. Schurrle is much younger and perhaps still has a lot to prove.
Where will he fit into this Chelsea side and what is his style of play? I believe Schurrle will play on the right wing, but perhaps inter-changing wings with Mata or Hazard. It will certainly be a frightening looking attacking setup with Andre involved, it’ll be very fast paced and fluent. I would personally be just as happy with Chelsea signing Schurrle as I would be Hulk.
Schurrle has a very clam style, whilst being very quick. He is excellent on the ball and likes to take players on. Germany tend to use him when they want a faster play of football, or when they need to counter attack. He is technical and very exciting. He has a similar work rate and match engine as our very own Ramires, but not as good defensively. He possesses an excellent long range shot and finishing ability.
I believe that the Chelsea supporters will soon claim Andre as their own, and if he does sign on the dotted line, he’ll become a key player for Chelsea and will be a part of a new record breaking attacking team, that is already starting to frighten Premier League managers and the season hasn’t even started yet.
