The speculation about who Andre Villas-Boas’ first signing will be as Chelsea manager is mounting and one bookmaker has opened a book on all of the players who could be on the move this summer to join Chelsea and the odds make interesting reading as an insight into who the most likely and least likely summer signings will be.
Despite a renewed bid for Luka Modric this week it seems that the Croatian is not the most likely summer signing for Chelsea, but he does remain a fairly likely signing, after Spurs rejected Chelsea’s second offer for the player the odds went out to 6/5 on Chelsea signing Luka Modric this summer. Now the most likely signing for Chelsea is another midfielder from the capital, Scott Parker. The West Ham midfielder has already had one unsuccessful spell but Michael Essien’s injury has left the Blues light in midfield and Parker appeals as a short term fix, he is just 4/7 to sign for Chelsea before the summer transfer window closes.
It seems the most likely player that Andre Villas-Boas could bring in from former club Porto is the highly rated Colombian striker Falcao. He is a classy finisher and great in the air and he could ideally fit into Chelsea’s system, the bookies make him a 4/5 chance to join Chelsea but that signing would surely leave question marks over the future of Fernando Torres who is a fairly similar player.
Another player who Villas-Boas could sign from Porto is midfielder Joao Moutinho and the current odds of 7/4 will surely fall if Chelsea are unsuccessful in their pursuit of Luka Modric. Another player who is a 7/4 chance to join Chelsea is Bolton defender Gary Cahill, he may be seen as a long term replacement for John Terry. One player who it seems Chelsea may have missed out on is Brazilian attacker Neymar, the Santos forward had seemed likely to sign for Chelsea this summer but Santos may keep hold of their prized asset for another season as he is now 4/1 to join Chelsea this summer.
The bad news for Chelsea fans is that Lionel Messi isn’t on his way to Stamford Bridge any time soon, the bookies make him a 66/1 chance to join Chelsea this summer whilst other unlikely signings include Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo who are both 50/1 to become Chelsea players before the end of the summer transfer window.
