‘A Manager is someone who gets results through other people, by making them successful’… does this relate to the Stamford Bridge Hot seat?

Results? Of course, why else would Roman employ them? Through people? Yes, because people are the stock-in-trade for a football manager.

By making them successful? Certainly, for it is this single factor that separates the good managers from others!

Guus Hiddink

A firm favourite, amongst the Stamford Bridge faithful. Has won the ‘big one’ with PSV, six league titles, 5 domestic cups and a Dutch Super Cup. He is highly respected in the game, has good media presence and can attract the top talent.

However, he failed to make the grade in Spain, lasting barely 2 years at Real Madrid and Real Betis. Can he buy well? Yuri Zirchov?

Andre Villas Boas
Youngest ever coach to win a European title. Knows Chelsea, as was part of Jose Mourinho’s back room staff. Won the treble this year, highly sought after.

However, something of an enigma, as he has never played the game. How will the top professionals deal with him, or he with them?

Manuel Pellegrini
The, Chile born, ex Real Madrid manager became well known in England for his exploits with unfashionable, Villarreal. He led the ‘yellow submarines’ to second place in La Liga and also the semi-finals of the Champions League. He also won league titles in Argentina with River Plate.

However, he does not know the premiership, could find it hard to settle in England and has never really won anything!

My choice is Guus Hiddink. He is highly respected at Chelsea and likes to play with two wingers. He would hit ‘the ground running’, would certainly entertain and bring a smile back to the blue faithful.

Does he fulfil the criteria for a top manager?

Results? Yes, he has consistently delivered, including a win percentage of 70 % + whilst at Chelsea

Through People? Yes, the Chelsea players would walk through brick walls for him!

By making them successful? Absolutely, just ask JT!
