Chelsea beat West Brom 2-0 today in a one sided encounter at Stamford Bridge, having not won our previous three home matches, with Sunderland on the first day of November being our last home win it was essential that we did not drop yet some more points at home.
Lampard was captain in place of the suspended John Terry, Cech remained in goal, Ashley Cole, Alex, Ivanovic and Bosingwa were in defence, Mikel, Ballack and Joey Cole joined Lamps in the middle, Deco was relegated to the bench with Scolari opting to pair Anelka and Drogba up front together.
We didn’t take long to break into the lead, all of two minutes had elapsed before Joe Cole’s cross was met by an unmarked Drogba who headed the ball back across the goal and into the opposite corner, giving Scott Carson no chance.
Ashley Cole had Chelsea’s next best chance, again at the back post, with a powerful left footed shot tipped onto the post by Carson, the rebound fell back to Cole, who’se right footed follow up proved disappointing and right at the keeper.
On the stroke of half time, when many fans had already gone for their half time pint, Ashley Cole got into the area, and from the opponents challenge the stray ball rolled to Lampard, who did well to keep his composure, beat his man first and then delicately chip over the outcoming Carson.
Half Time saw Belletti come on for Bosingwa and not a lot to report on the field, With Fulham in two days time it was best to take the foot off the gas in the second half, and the second half reflected this.
Drogba was unlucky on a number of occasions from the right hand side of the box, forcing some good saves from Carson before coming off for Malouda, Deco came on later for Joe Cole. Malouda was unlucky with a shot that hit the side netting, Lampard tried another chip which he misjudged and it went straight into Carson’s hands, and the ref had a word with Ballack for looking like he was trying to punch the ball into the net from a corner. Ballack later got the only booking of the match for pushing Brunt.
The Matthew Harding Stand had been loud in parts of the first half, noteably Gate 14 singing about themselves and chants of ‘There’s only one Zigga Zagga’ coming from either that or another gate in their little rivalry. During a West Brom injury in the second half saw one of the best ‘We’re the middle of the Shed’ battles of the season commenced, and sounded fantastic from where I was in the Matthew Harding Stand.
So with no new injuries possibly the same team will start in two days, personally though I felt Anelka didn’t get too involved in the match, Drogba also didn’t like staying up front, he was tracking back like usual and it seemed Ballack was the furthest up a lot of the time.
It was vital that we won today, with our home form being disappointing in contrast to our on the road form, League matches at home currently stand as follows:
August – One Win, One Draw
September – One Draw
October – One Win, One Loss
November – One Win, One Draw, One Loss
December – One Win, One Draw
W4, D4, L2
