Beating Bradford City can hardly be called a Christmas present. More a stocking-filler and a disappointing one at that. Still, that is Chelsea for you.
There we were in August thinking that Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink would provide the missing link as we challenged for the title. Five months on and we have sacked Vialli, sold Flo, lie ninth in the Premiership and have installed a manager whose only English is “Hello meester”. Happy Christmas? Bah humbug.
Still, on this display there is a lot to look forward to. Ranieri is renowned for giving youngsters their chance and some of them are responding fully to the challenge. Sam Dalla Bona and Eidur Gudjohnson in particular were outstanding and capped fine performances with a goal apiece.
Our rampant goal difference would suggest that buying Robbie Fowler is hardly going to propel us up the league. Ask any Chelsea fan and they will tell you that we need one maybe two international midfielders, not a striker.
