The start of the 2013/14 season is upon us and all is exciting at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have recently signed top play Willian Borges da Silva for a cool £30million from Russian Premier League Club Anzhi Makhachkala. The midfielder, who has been compared to Juan Mata and Hazard, joins the team at an opportune moment in the clubs history. He will no doubt improve the odds for Chelsea winning their next match. The star player looks like a great addition to a strong squad.
With some of the most talented players in the world all playing at Stamford Bridge, it is perhaps also fortuitous that this season sees historical champions Manchester United starting the season on wobbly form as they deal with a bad summer in the transfer window due to their inexperienced chief exec and a new manager who will struggle, no matter how talented, to fill the boots of retired manager Alex Ferguson.
All is not about incoming players in Chelsea as this season sees winger Victor Moses on loan to rivals Liverpool. The Nigerian has insisted that this is so that he can play the best football he can, pointing out that with such a strong team for Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho, he was looking at a season of half matches. Liverpool has promised the player that he will take a prominent position on the team. The move is very much in keeping with the player’s determination to be the best footballer he can, stemming from his devastating upbringing where his parents were killed during rioting in 2002. The single-mindedness that this has given the player is to be commended.
Willian joins Chelsea as a top-flight player, scoring his first goal three months after his debut at 18 and scoring 37 goals for his former team, Ukrainian Premier League club Shakhtar Donetsk. He helped his Ukraine team to win four Ukraine Premier League title and six domestic cups, and during the transfer window, rumours about where the player was going to end up abounded, with Liverpool, Tottenham, Man City, Man United and Chelsea all names as potential homes for the star player. He finally settled at Chelsea, stolen out from under Tottenham’s nose even as they had him doing a medical before they confirmed the deal.
At any rate, Jose Mourinho’s team looks like a strong contender for this year’s Premier League title.
