An intriguing story coming fresh out of France today, claiming that Chelsea have renewed their interest in Marseille full back Cesar Azpilicueta, opening doubts about the Maicon deal.

It has been reported this week by various sources that a deal for Maicon was all but complete, but The Metro have reported today that sources from France say a deal for Azpilicueta could still happen.

Cesar Azpilicueta is an exciting Spanish right back that has bags of potential. He boasts all the right attributes that Di Matteo is looking for from his new right back, and he is many of the supporters preferred choice.

The 22 year old is a Spanish under-21 international and possesses the Spanish confidence and technical ability. He has also attracted interest from Newcastle, but they look focused on tempting French International Debuchy to join them instead.

I can only assume that if the Maicon deal does not go through, it will be because of the players high wage demands, which looked set to hit the 4 million a year mark.

One thing for certain is that Chelsea need to sign a right back before the season begins, after deciding not to renew Jose Boswingwa’s contract.
