Chelsea, according the to the Daily Mirror, are going head-to-head with Italian serial championship winners Juventus for the signing of Atletico Madrid central defender Stefan Savic.
The report covered originally in Sky Italia and now via the Daily Mirror states that Chelsea are keen on the 27-year old Montenegro international, who despite being a backup option for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, still managed to make 37 appearances in all competitions this past season – including four times on the club’s path to winning the Europa League.
Fans in England may remember Stefan Savic from his time at Manchester City, with the Montenegro defender arriving from Partizan Belgrade only to be sold on to Italian side Fiorentina a year after his arrival. Savic has been at Spanish side Atletico since 2015 but has been battling it out with current defensive pair Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez.
With the Blues seeking reinforcements to sure up their own defence, now looks like the time for a player like Savic to make the jump over to west London to establish themselves in the back-line in a bid to return to the Champions League and ultimately a league title winning squad under Antonio Conte, or whoever ends up in-charge of the team for next season.
Juventus however pose Chelsea’s biggest threat to the signing of the 27-year old defender – the promise of a challenging for a league title, domestic cups and going deep into next season’s Champions League on-paper looks (at this moment) as the most attractive option – but the Blues will be hoping Savic has unfinished business in the Premier League and the challenge of competing with some of Europe’s top clubs week-in week-out.
