There appears to be an adamancy at Chelsea from manager Maurizio Sarri to strengthen the club’s defensive line in the January transfer window, with the Daily Star stating that the club are eyeing up a double swoop on AC Milan.
The defenders at the centre of the Blues’ interest are Mattia Caldara and Alessio Romagnoli, however the Italian giants are said to be willing to make the west London club work for their signatures – so a quick move for the two isn’t likely.
Italian news source Calcio Mercato via the Daily Star suggest that Chelsea could offer midfielder Cesc Fabregas as makeweight for the two defenders who are viewed as longer term replacements for Gary Cahill and David Luiz.
Alessio Romagnoli has recently signed a new contract in Milan taking him to 2022 and has been a key figure in the squad so far this season.
Mattia Caldara on might be an even harder defender for Chelsea to attain any time soon, with the 24-year old having only arrived at the San Siro in the summer transfer window from Juventus.
So far, Chelsea have been pretty solid defensively, keeping two clean sheets in four Premier League fixtures. However, the two goals conceded against Arsenal have led to speculation that Sarri wants more choice in defense as he looks to build on the early season momentum.
