Chelsea arguably face their most difficult challenge in this season’s UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening, with a trip to the Johan Cruyff Arena to face last season’s semi-finalists Ajax.
Victory in the Dutch capital will surely be required if Chelsea are to top Group H, a win for the current Eredivisie league leaders though would take them to nine points out of a possible nine, with still three games to play – a tall order for Frank Lampard’s team to surpass.
The big news ahead of kick-off is that two of the Blues’ midfield have not travelled to Amsterdam, via Chelsea FC Official – Ross Barkley and N’Golo Kante remain in London. Other notably absentees to the Chelsea line-up vs Ajax will be defenders Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and of course midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The growing injury list is once again set to hand Lampard a far from ideal Chelsea starting XI vs Ajax but CFCnet predicts that Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori will partner in central defence, and it would be a huge surprise not to see Marcos Alonso not start – after his well-taken winner at the weekend.
The predicted Chelsea line up vs Ajax should surely see Tammy Abraham start his third successive Champions League group game, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Willian supporting from the wide positions.
Mason Mount will likely be partnered in midfield with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic who took plenty of praise for his performance in the win this past weekend – that was a fifth straight victory for Chelsea who will be desperate to make their mark on the competition on Wednesday, and six in-a-row.
Predicted Chelsea line-up vs Ajax
Defence: Cesar Azpilicueta, Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori, Marcos Alonso.
Midfield: Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, Willian.
Attack: Tammy Abraham.
