A Chelsea fan from North London has created a fan site dedicated to the national Belgium team ahead of the Euro competition this summer.
The site, belgiumtowineuro2016.com, was set up by Daniel Tannenbaum as a tribute to Chelsea and Premier League players representing the Belgium Red Devils.
Daniel explained: “I originally started showing interest in Belgium during the last World Cup in Brazil when Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku were Chelsea players and burst on the scene. They won all 3 of their qualifiers; beat USA in the last 16 before sadly losing to Argentina 1-0 in the quarters.
Looking ahead to Euro 2016, around 16 of their 24 squad will consist of Premiership players from Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United – which makes them a real connoisseur team and probably ever Englishmen’s second team.”
The website offers news about the Belgium players, match reports and analysis. There has been particular talk about Eden Hazard’s future with Chelsea. The site also pays attention to the funny side of the beautiful game with viral videos, replica shirt competitions and Belgium lookalikes comparing Thibaut Courtois to the long stringy character from the Lloyds TSB adverts. After Belgium topped Group B of the Euro qualifiers, fending off competition from Bosnia, Israel and Wales, they are now ranked number 1 in the world FIFA rankings.
Daniel commented: “I find it astonishing that the current Euro 2016 odds put Belgium at 12/1 to win the competition, especially given their FIFA ranking and the fact that playing in France is practically home soil.”
Since Belgium failed to qualify for the Euro 2004, 2008 and 2012, the team will be relishing the opportunity to shine on the international stage, with an out-of-form Eden Hazard in desperate need to show why he is one of the greatest players in the world.
